  • ( 2601118 ) Position Information TxDOT's Fleet Operations Division is seeking one (1) Equipment Mechanic I, II or III based in Yoakum, TX. This position supports TxDOT's mission by maintaining and repairing a wide range of wheeled vehicles, including passenger vehicles, medium
  • and heavy-duty trucks, and construction equipment.
Fleet mechanics play a critical role in keeping Texas moving. We support daily operations and respond to emergency and inclement weather events that impact communities across the state. I, II, & III
Performs repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
Equipment Mechanic
I, II & III
Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems. Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information. Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system. Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges. Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights. Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to these activities. Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment. Prepares vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers and mobile radios. Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems. Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Equipment Mechanic II
  • Responsibilities in addition to those listed above Trains less experienced technicians. Travels and performs work in other shops throughout the state as required. Equipment Mechanic III
  • Responsibilities in addition to those listed above Leads and trains less experienced technicians.
Performs duties of the Shop Coordinator in their absence.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
No degree/diploma required.
Experience:
Equipment Mechanic I
  • 2 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair Equipment Mechanic II
  • 4 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair Equipment Mechanic III
  • 7 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 120 calendar days from date of course registration. You will have 2 attempts to pass the written and driving exams.
Preferred Qualifications:
Commercial driver's license (CDL) Diesel or Automotive Technology Associate's Degree or technical certifications ASE Certifications Experience using diagnostic equipment and software Experience working on heavy equipment or construction equipment
Competencies:
Equipment Mechanic I:
Proficient skill in using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade Proficient skill in mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines Proficient skill diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications Proficient skill in using computers and Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel and Word Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics Ability to follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures Ability to communicate effectively Knowledge of automatic and manual shift transmission repair Proficient skill in troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems Proficient skill in brake repairs to include antilocking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems Proficient diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications Equipment Mechanic
II & III
  • Competencies in addition to those above Extensive knowledge of mechanical equipment operation and maintenance Expert skill in brake repairs to include antilocking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems Expert skill in troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems Proficient skill in coordinating labor, materials and equipment Proficient skill in reading and interpreting equipment repair and parts contracts Equipment Mechanic III•Competencies in addition to those above Expert diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour Subject to noise Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
Conditions of Employment:

This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.   • does not authorize "medical marijuana" under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations. Will be required to work alternate schedules during an emergency response situation such as adverse weather events. Will be required to travel to other district/division shops within the state as needed.
