Equipment Operator I/II

• Recycling and Composting Department Schedule:

  Monday
• Friday, 7:00 AM
• 3:30 PM (or occasionally Tuesday
• Saturday, 8:00 AM
• 4:30 PM) The Town of Bethlehem is seeking candidates for an Equipment Operator I or II in our Recycling & Composting Department.

Primary duties include but are not necessarily limited to the following:

Compost Facility:

• Operates wheel loader to move yard waste, food scraps, and compost;
• Loads residential and commercial customers' trucks and trailers with compost;
• Operates windrow turner, trommel screen, and irrigator to process compost material;
• Performs manual tasks for facility operations and maintenance work, and routine administrative duties such as filling out scale tickets for bulk compost loads;
• Washes, lubricates and services equipment with water, gas, and oil, and makes minor repairs.

Transfer Station Facility:

• Operates compact wheel loader to load C&D material into roll-offs;
• Drives and operates hook-lift truck to transport recyclables to local facilities;
• Operates packer truck to collect trash from town facilities;
• Performs manual tasks for facility operations and maintenance work;
• Washes, lubricates and services truck or other equipment with water, gas, and oil, and makes minor repairs.

Occasional Other Duties:

• Assists Highway Department during winter storm events by operating truck in spreading sand or salt on icy roads; hauling snow to a dumping point; plows snow with a blade attached to a truck;
• Operates packer truck to recycle cardboard and/or other equipment or manual labor tasks at annual recycling events.

Candidates shall have a minimum of one (1) year of experience operating a truck requiring a Class B license to operate, have the ability to read and write, and must possess a valid NYS Class B Commercial Driver's License. Preferred candidates shall have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in the operation of moderately heavy automotive and motor equipment including a wheel loader, and be qualified for the Equipment Operator II position. Starting Salary for Equipment Operator I is $54,579 Starting Salary for Equipment Operator II is $57,750 The Town of Bethlehem offers a competitive salary along with other benefits, which include paid vacation, holidays, sick leave, medical and dental insurance, and New York State Retirement.
