Job Title:
Excavation Safety Professional Job Description The Excavation Safety Professional serves as the excavation and trenching competent person for active construction operations, providing continuous field oversight to ensure safe practices, regulatory compliance, and effective risk control across multiple excavation sites on a single campus. Responsibilities Act as the designated Excavation and Trenching Competent Person for active excavation operations. Provide continuous field oversight of open trenches, shoring systems, sloping and benching, access and egress, and spoil pile placement. Monitor excavation work across multiple active sites on the same campus and maintain a strong field presence. Identify unsafe conditions and behaviors promptly and take immediate corrective action. Stop work when conditions present an imminent risk to health or safety. Enforce OSHA excavation and trenching standards on a daily basis. Ensure subcontractors operate in full compliance with OSHA requirements, site-specific safety rules, and approved job hazard analyses and permits. Participate in safety walkdowns and inspections as required by the project and site procedures. Verify that excavation safety plans and permits are implemented and followed in the field. Communicate hazards, corrective actions, and expectations clearly to all relevant site personnel. Escalate issues through proper site channels when additional support or intervention is needed. Support and reinforce a strong safety culture through daily engagement and coaching in the field. Essential Skills Demonstrated experience in construction safety with a focus on excavation and trenching activities. Strong knowledge of OSHA excavation and trenching standards and regulations. Current OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification (must be current per site requirements). Completion of
OSHA 3015
Excavation, Trenching, and Soil Mechanics training (required). Excavation and Trenching Competent Person training and the ability to function as the designated competent person on site. General OSHA authority to function as on-site safety oversight for construction activities. Ability to recognize, evaluate, and control excavation-related hazards in the field. Strong communication skills to clearly convey hazards, expectations, and corrective actions. Ability to make decisive stop-work decisions when conditions present imminent risk. Capability to work independently in the field while coordinating with site supervision and subcontractors. Additional Skills & Qualifications Background in safety, construction, environmental health and safety (EHS), or health and safety management. Experience in HSE management, site safety, and OSHA safety compliance on construction projects. Familiarity with job hazard analyses, permits, and site-specific safety rules and procedures. Experience delivering or supporting safety training related to OSHA regulations and excavation safety. Strong observational skills and attention to detail in dynamic construction environments. Ability to build effective working relationships with subcontractors and site personnel to influence safe behaviors. Work Environment This role is predominantly outdoor and field-based, with approximately 90-95% of the workday spent outside on active construction sites. The position requires comfort working in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow. You will regularly walk large, active construction sites for extended periods while observing and verifying safe excavation practices. The typical schedule is five days per week with approximately 8-hour days, with early site starts and an expectation to be on site around 7:00 AM. Occasional weekend work may occur but is infrequent and non-routine. The environment is fast-paced and safety-focused, with frequent interaction with subcontractors, site supervision, and other project stakeholders. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Blue Bell, PA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $38.95 - $58.65/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
