Job Description

Job Summary The Field and Collections Research Assistant position is involved in a research project related to the diversity and distribution of freshwater algae across freshwater environments in Boulder County. This position provides hands-on experience in field work, specimen processing, documentation of specimens, database management, report preparation, and identification of freshwater algae, offering museum collections management experience while supporting day-to-day curatorial and collections activities. Who We Are The mission of the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History is to contribute to the knowledge of the natural world and human history through research, teaching, and public education. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be Fieldwork collecting freshwater algae from microhabitats in Boulder County. Prepare for fieldwork and post-fieldwork activities. Process fresh samples for observation and identification using research grade light microscopes. Process samples for permanent diatom slides. Database samples, slides, identifications and images according to established museum standards. Support curators, staff, and other students with collection-related tasks. Assist curators and other staff with collection tours, presentations, and paleontology outreach. Follow proper handling, safety, and collections care protocols in the lab and in the field. What You Should Know This is a temporary, part-time position, 15-20 hours per week (flexibility on days in the field). What We Can Offer The hourly pay range for this part-time position is $20-30, depending on background and experience. What We Require Graduate or undergraduate student at CU Boulder. Technical expertise in Microsoft Word and Excel. What You Will Need Detail-oriented. Ability to work independently and follow protocols. Strong communication skills. Interest in field work. What We Would Like You to Have Successful completion of the Freshwater Phycology class (EBIO 4080/5080). Prior field experience, preferably in aquatic habitats.
