Job Description

A growing construction organization in the San Marcos area is seeking an experienced Staff Accountant for a full-time, direct-hire opportunity. This role is ideal for a hands-on accounting professional with strong construction accounting expertise who enjoys owning daily accounting operations while also supporting higher-level financial reporting, project accounting, and compliance. The Staff Accountant will work closely with ownership and key business partners, providing visibility into job costs, WIP reporting, financial statements, payroll compliance, bonding, insurance, and overall accounting accuracy. Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, billing, reconciliations, and related administrative functions.
  • Prepare monthly customer billing, follow up on past-due accounts, and support accurate cash flow and project financial tracking.
  • Manage WIP reporting, job costing, general ledger activity, account reconciliations, and monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements.
  • Coordinate certified payroll, prevailing wage requirements, escrow accounts, tax filings, insurance audits, bonding, banking, and CPA-related accounting matters.
  • Maintain contractor registrations, subcontractor insurance compliance, prequalification documentation, internal controls, and GAAP-compliant accounting practices.
  • Provide financial reporting and analysis directly to ownership while supporting accounting and administrative staff as needed. Compensation and Benefits
  • Direct-hire opportunity.
  • Salary range: $85,000 to $120,000 per year, depending on experience.

  • 401(k) Required Qualifications and Skills
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Construction accounting experience is required.
  • Foundation for Construction Software experience is required.
  • Strong knowledge of
GAAP, WIP
reporting, job costing, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
  • Experience with certified payroll and prevailing wage requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and detailed accounting tasks independently.
  • Excellent organization, communication, follow-through, and attention to detail.
  • Hands-on working style with the ability to communicate directly and professionally with ownership.
  • Stable employment history and demonstrated longevity are strongly valued. Preferred Qualifications
  • General Engineering Contractor or similar construction industry experience.
  • Experience working with outside CPAs, banks, bonding companies, and insurance providers.
  • Experience coordinating insurance renewals, audits, subcontractor insurance compliance, and claims support.
  • Familiarity with 401(k) deposits, annual filings, contractor registrations, certifications, renewals, and prequalification documentation.
