Description About the Role Robert Half is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Accountant for a contract opportunity with a respected nonprofit organization in New Haven, Connecticut. This position is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys supporting mission-driven organizations and has a strong background in financial reporting, general ledger accounting, month-end close processes, and compliance. The Senior Accountant will play a key role in maintaining the organization's financial integrity, supporting leadership with reporting and analysis, and ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulations. Responsibilities

+ Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger activity

+ Lead month-end and year-end closing processes

+ Prepare accurate and timely financial statements and management reports

+ Analyze financial data and assist with budgeting and forecasting activities

+ Reconcile bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, and restricted funds

+ Assist with grant tracking, reporting, and compliance requirements

+ Support annual audit preparation and coordinate requests from external auditors

+ Monitor internal controls and recommend process improvements

+ Review accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll transactions for accuracy

+ Assist with cash flow analysis and financial planning initiatives

+ Partner with department leaders to provide financial guidance and reporting support

+ Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements Requirements Qualifications

+ Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required + 4+ years of accounting experience, including general ledger and financial reporting responsibilities

+ Strong understanding of GAAP and financial statement preparation

+ Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel

+ Experience with accounting software and ERP systems

+ Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills

+ High attention to detail and accuracy

+ Strong written and verbal communication skills

+ Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment Preferred Qualifications

+ Previous experience working in a nonprofit organization

+ Knowledge of fund accounting and grant accounting

+ Experience supporting audits and preparing audit schedules

+ Familiarity with nonprofit financial reporting requirements, including restricted and unrestricted funds

+ CPA or CPA candidate preferred Schedule

+ Full-time, Monday through Friday

+ Standard business hours
