Job Description:
Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) is seeking a strategic, detail-oriented Accountant III to play a key role in a collaborative, mission-driven team focused on protecting the university community and environment. This position goes beyond traditional accounting, offering the opportunity to drive financial accuracy, strengthen internal controls, and support high-impact programs and strategic initiatives. You will partner closely with leadership, lead, and mentor staff, and help shape process improvements that enhance operations and transparency. The Accountant III serves as a senior-level accounting professional responsible for complex financial analysis, compliance oversight, financial reporting, and process improvement initiatives. This position also provides direct supervision and leadership to assigned administrative and accounting support staff, ensuring accurate transactional processing, strong internal controls, and continuous professional development within the unit. Financial Management & Accounting Operations Manages one or more fiscal and accounting functions, recommending and formulating policies and procedures for effective administration. Prepares, analyzes, and breaks down a range of reports, accounts, reconciliations, schedules, or statements. Oversee and process complex accounting functions including Accounts Receivable (AR), Accounts Payable (AP), P-Card transactions, general ledger reconciliation, journal entries, and month-end/year-end closing processes. Prepare variance analyses to support informed decision-making. Monitor multiple funding sources (Auxiliary, State, grants, and other funding streams) to ensure proper allocation and compliance. Strategic & Operational Support Support long-range financial planning and forecasting for EH&S operations and service lines. Partner with EH&S leadership to evaluate service costs, rate structures, and cost recovery models. Identify opportunities for process improvements, automation, and efficiency enhancements. Provide financial guidance to teams leads to support operational excellence. Contribute to special projects, financial modeling, and business initiatives. Compliance, Policies & Internal Controls Recommends, formulates, and enforces internal policies, procedures, and control systems. Serve as a subject matter expert for accounting and financial policies. Leadership & Supervision Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Provide direct supervision to assigned accounting and administrative staff, including work assignment. Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the team. Special Projects / Other Duties as Assigned Contribute to special projects, financial modeling, and business initiatives. Advanced proficiency in Excel and financial systems.
NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE
Normal work schedule is Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. Seasonal hours/days as needed. Classified as Essential Personnel A criminal background will be conducted.
Expected Salary:
$65,000.00 to $75,000.00 Annually based on experience.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and four years of relevant experience.
Preferred:
Knowledge of accounting principles and practices Knowledge of methods of data collection Knowledge of office procedures and practices Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
