Exempt Job Summary The Town of Surfside is seeking a qualified and detail-oriented Accountant to join the Finance Department. Under the direction of the Finance Director, this position performs professional accounting work involving the maintenance of financial records, preparation of reports, reconciliations, journal entries, audits, and other governmental accounting functions. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of governmental accounting practices, financial reporting, and computerized accounting systems, with the ability to work accurately and effectively in a municipal environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Prepare financial reports for various organizations, including local, state, and federal agencies. Prepare bank reconciliations, including related journal entries and supporting documentation. Prepare journal entries necessary to maintain the General Ledger as directed. Establish and maintain job cost files and ensure requests are appropriate from a budgetary standpoint. Assist in preparing cost allocations and cost studies. Prepare account schedules required for year-end activities. Administer the Town's capital asset schedule, including inventory procedures and controls. Assist with risk management functions, including management of insurance schedules. Assist with annual and periodic audits, including preparation of audit schedules, documentation, supporting materials, and analyses. Coordinate FEMA-related financial documentation and reporting. Administer Resort Tax and Local Business Tax Receipts (LBTR). Assist with the preparation of the Finance Manual. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities The ideal candidate should possess: Knowledge of governmental accounting principles, practices, and procedures. Knowledge of computers and computerized accounting systems. Knowledge of auditing methods. Knowledge of legal requirements related to Florida governmental accounting. Ability to prepare or assist with complex financial reports and statements. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and department heads. Ability to read and understand various financial and administrative documents. Ability to identify and differentiate between correct and incorrect accounting entries. Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing. Ability to effectively use computer systems to retrieve, enter, modify, update, and maintain information. Education & Experience Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. Minimum of two (2) years of accounting experience , preferably within a municipality. Knowledge of the Tyler Incode Financial Management System is desirable. A comparable combination of training, education, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. Licenses & Certifications No specific licenses, certifications, or registrations are required for this position. Physical Requirements & Work Environment Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to access, input, and retrieve information using a computer. Ability to access filing cabinets for filing and retrieval of records. Ability to lift up to 40 pounds to a height of 42 inches at least five continuous times . Position generally works in an office environment. May occasionally perform work outside to review field conditions.
