At Staples, our Finance team plays a critical role in supporting the business through accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and data-driven decision making. As a Sr Accountant I , you will be a key contributor to the month-end close process, financial statement preparation, and accounting operations that support our business. In this role, you will collaborate across departments, improve accounting processes, and help ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial results. What you'll be doing: Prepare and post monthly journal entries in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Support the month-end close process while maintaining an efficient two-day close timeline. Perform monthly balance sheet reconciliations and analyze account activity to ensure accuracy and completeness. Partner with cross-functional teams to develop and maintain accounting processes for balance sheet accounts. Ensure appropriate financial controls are established and maintained across supported accounting areas. Assist with internal and external audit requests by gathering documentation and providing accounting support. Support financial reporting activities that contribute to the preparation of company financial statements. Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, increase efficiency, and enhance data accuracy. Help implement monitoring and systematic controls that strengthen financial integrity and compliance. Collaborate with business partners to provide insights and support informed business decision-making. What you bring to the table: Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and evaluate financial information. Excellent problem-solving capabilities and a proactive approach to identifying solutions. Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accuracy. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to build productive working relationships across multiple departments. Strong organizational and multitasking abilities in a deadline-driven environment. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team setting. A continuous improvement mindset focused on enhancing processes and controls. High level of motivation and desire for professional growth. Sound judgment when evaluating routine accounting matters and escalating issues when appropriate. What's needed - Basic Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. 2+ years of accounting, finance, or related professional experience. Strong analytical, organizational, and multitasking skills. Ability to work effectively within a team environment. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Highly motivated with the ability to manage multiple priorities. What's needed -
Preferred Qualifications:
CPA or active CPA candidate. Experience with financial analysis and budgeting. Previous accounting experience within a corporate environment. Experience supporting financial reporting, month-end close, or audit processes. Demonstrated experience driving process improvements and strengthening internal controls.
