Position Summary Cascades Humane Society is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to join our leadership support team and oversee the organization's accounting functions. This position will play a critical role in ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, supporting compliance requirements, and providing financial insight to guide organizational decision-making. The Senior Accountant will work closely with the Executive Director, Director of Shelter Operations, Finance Committee, and external auditors to ensure the financial health and sustainability of CHS. The ideal candidate will have strong nonprofit accounting experience, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to translate financial data into meaningful information for leadership and board members. Essential Responsibilities Accounting Operations Manage day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger activity, and account reconciliations. Ensure accurate and timely recording of all financial transactions. Maintain financial records in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Monitor cash flow, revenue, expenses, and account balances to support sound financial management. Maintain and strengthen internal accounting controls and procedures. Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks accounting software, with the ability to manage financial records, generate reports, reconcile accounts, and utilize the system effectively for daily accounting operations and financial reporting. Financial Reporting Prepare accurate monthly financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, budget-to-actual reports, and supporting schedules. Present monthly financial reports to the Finance Committee and assist in explaining financial trends, variances, and areas requiring attention. Provide financial analysis and recommendations to leadership to support strategic decision-making. Assist with financial forecasting and long-term planning. Budget Development & Planning Collaborate with the Executive Director and Director of Shelter Operations in developing the annual organizational budget. Assist department leaders with budget planning, expense projections, and financial goals. Monitor budget performance throughout the year and provide recommendations for adjustments as needed. Audit & Compliance Serve as the primary staff contact for the annual financial audit process. Coordinate with external auditors by preparing schedules, documentation, reconciliations, and requested information. Ensure timely completion of audit requirements and implementation of recommendations. Assist with required financial reporting, grant reporting, and compliance documentation. Additional Responsibilities Support financial aspects of grants, restricted funds, and donor-designated contributions. Assist with year-end closing procedures and preparation of required financial documents. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive financial and organizational information. Participate as a collaborative member of the CHS team and support the organization's mission of connecting animals in need with people who care.
Qualifications Required:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred. Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience. Strong knowledge of financial reporting, reconciliations, and accounting principles. Experience preparing financial statements and managing audit processes. Proficiency with QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel. Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred:
Experience working in a nonprofit organization. Knowledge of nonprofit fund accounting, restricted funds, and grant reporting.
