Are you a detail-oriented accounting professional who enjoys keeping financial operations accurate, organized, and running smoothly? Animal Humane Society is looking for a Staff Accountant to join our Finance team. If you have a strong foundation in accounting principles, an eye for detail, and an interest in supporting a mission-driven nonprofit organization, we'd love to hear from you. Schedule & Work Environment This is a full-time, exempt, hybrid position based in Golden Valley, Minnesota. Regular and predictable attendance, punctuality, and availability during operational hours is required. Occasional work at other AHS locations or attendance at offsite meetings and events may be required. Reliable transportation is required. Job Duties Prepare routine journal entries and supporting documentation. Review financial transactions for accurate and consistent coding and classification. Maintain documentation and records supporting financial transactions. Verify the completeness and accuracy of financial data. Support established accounting workflows and approval processes. Record payroll-related journal entries and reconcile payroll liability accounts. Review payroll reports and investigate accounting discrepancies. Maintain payroll-related reconciliations and supporting schedules. Support accounting for payroll taxes, employee benefits, and retirement activity. Coordinate with the payroll processing function on accounting-related matters. Prepare assigned account reconciliation and supporting documentation. Support month-end and year-end close activities. Compile and analyze financial information needed for journal entries. Maintain general ledger records and supporting schedules. Assist with financial reporting and ensure the accuracy of financial data. Prepare documentation and schedules for external audit requests, including payroll- and benefits-related requests. Maintain documented accounting procedures. Use Sage Intacct and other financial systems for transaction processing, reporting, and recordkeeping. Support financial system data integrity, testing, and process improvements. Requirements Experience & Education Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred. 2-4 years of accounting experience preferred. Experience supporting payroll accounting or account reconciliations preferred. Nonprofit accounting experience is a plus. Experience working with an ERP or similar financial system preferred. Skills & Qualifications Working knowledge of accounting principles and GAAP. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Strong communication and problem-solving skills. Ability to solve multiple priorities and meet deadlines. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism. Comfort using financial systems and reporting tools. Physical & Emotional Requirements Ability to sit at a desk for prolonged periods. Ability to lift and carry up to 10 pounds. This position is primarily office and desk based and involves prolonged periods of sitting. Because our work takes place in an animal shelter environment, some areas may be humid, noisy, or odorous. This role must also be comfortable with the emotional aspects of animal welfare work, including humane euthanasia.
