Senior Accountant

Job Description

The Senior Accountant is responsible for performing financial reporting and analysis in accordance with GAAP. The Senior Accountant prepares, reviews, and analyzes journal entries and schedules to support timely and accurate financial reporting. The Senior Accountant prepares monthly reconciliations and assists the Controller with drafting financial statements. Additionally, the Senior Accounting performs financial statement analysis, process improvement, audit functions, and contributes to various financial projects. Must have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience with a combination of public accounting and/or nonprofit and/or healthcare accounting. The Senior Accountant reports directly to the Controller/Finance Director and works closely with the other finance team members to achieve organizational objectives.
The Senior Accountant will:
Prepare and post monthly, quarterly, and ad hoc journal entries, maintaining appropriate schedules and support. Maintain various account reconciliation schedules and analyze them for accuracy and consistency; complete adjusting entries as needed. Monitor and account for assigned grant / contract portfolio, providing support from budget to desk audits to final claim submissions. Handle all financial reporting data with quality and determine proper accounting treatment for transactions based on accounting principles. Support monthly report preparation and disbursement. Prepare interim and year-end schedules for audits, single audits, and 990, as well as other filings or evaluation engagements with external parties. Document and enhance processes and procedures to facilitate accurate and timely financial information. Complete special projects and ad hoc analysis as assigned. Work closely with other departments and business units regarding accounting activities. Support team efforts and build authentic relationships with individuals in work groups and teams. Consistently demonstrate and live Washburn's cultural tenets and values. Participate in the agency's activities to connect regularly with others. Teamwork and Collaboration - The Senior Accountant is expected to work as part of the Finance team as well as collaborate with teams across the agency, including: Attend and participate in Finance, Billing, Payroll, and other agency meetings as necessary Support and serve as a backup for the Accounting Associate Perform team projects as needed Professional Development - Each staff member at Washburn Center is responsible for their own professional development.
The Senor Accountant will:
Stay up-to-date on current accounting and finance trends and best practices through various forms of training and information source. Be aware of other ways to develop skills and knowledge pertaining to the position including non-profit operations and finance management Monitor goals to ensure performance management framework compliance Undergraduate or graduate degree (Finance, Accounting, or a related field) or equivalent work experience is required Thorough knowledge of financial and accounting practices and procedures including GAAP is required Familiarity with nonprofit governance processes is preferred CPA or MBA strongly preferred Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance and/or related field is required Experience working with the Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP) is required Knowledge and experience with monthly accounting cycles and procedures is required Extensive experience in monthly financial reporting, and year-end audit prep is required Knowledge in grant management and administration is preferred Experience mental health, or health services organizations is strongly preferred Deep nonprofit finance knowledge, including nonprofit monthly cycles is required Position Competencies Advanced Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains (GP) and Microsoft office suite skills Great attention to detail, analytical and interpersonal skills Strong ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize conflicting deadlines Handle confidential information discreetly Confident working in teams or independently Take initiative and follow through tasks completion with minimal instruction and guidance Display flexibility to shift priorities as needed Build trust and rapport with internal and external clients; support teamwork and collaborate cross-functionally Adhere to policies and procedures, including developing new policies and procedures as needed Communicate in a positive, direct, and constructive manner across the agency
