Job Description

About the Role A growing multi-site healthcare organization in Western North Carolina is hiring a Staff Accountant & Compliance Auditor — a hybrid role unlike a typical staff accountant position. You'll split your time between core accounting work in the business office and structured, on-site compliance auditing across our clinic network. If you like variety and are comfortable moving between spreadsheets one day and clinic visits the next, this position is made for you. This position reports directly to the VP of Finance & Information Systems, which keeps the audit function independent from the clinical operations it reviews. What You'll Do Accounting (~ 30% of your time) Record daily bank transactions and cash activity to the general ledger with correct account coding. Prepare and post standard monthly journal entries — accruals, prepaid amortization, depreciation, reclassifications, and intercompany entries. Prepare monthly balance sheet account reconciliations (prepaid expenses, accrued liabilities, intercompany balances, and more). Maintain the fixed asset schedule and support capitalization decisions, useful life, and depreciation tracking. Create and issue non-patient customer invoices (occupational health, employer contracts, intercompany charges) and track collections. Maintain grant and restricted fund tracking schedules where applicable. Flag unusual entries, coding inconsistencies, or control concerns, and support special projects like clinic onboarding or system implementations. Compliance Auditing (~ 70% of your time) Learn and document required workflows, forms, and compliance standards for each clinical service line and encounter type. Build audit tools, checklists, and sampling methodologies, then conduct structured, scheduled audits across all clinic locations. Verify required supporting documents are scanned, attached, and retrievable for each encounter — including proof of delivery, visit summaries, and referral authorizations. Analyze findings by site, service line, and individual staff member; distinguish workflow issues from training gaps from performance issues. Produce clear, prioritized audit reports for Operations leadership, and follow up to confirm corrective actions stick. Deliver direct, constructive feedback and hands-on training to front-desk and clinical support staff; build job aids and SOPs. Travel to clinic locations for on-site audits, real-time coaching, and support for new site openings. Stay current on payer, state, and federal requirements, and serve as a point of contact for
HIPAA/PHI
handling questions at the point of service. Periodically work front-desk registration or other operational roles to stay fluent in real-world workflows. What You Bring Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, or a related field (Healthcare Administration coursework a plus). 2-3+ years of hands-on accounting experience — general ledger entry, journal entries, and balance sheet reconciliations. Experience with audits, quality reviews, or compliance monitoring in any accounting, revenue cycle, or operational setting; you don't need prior healthcare-specific knowledge, just the ability to learn a structured audit methodology. Comfort working across both financial and clinical systems, and picking up new software quickly. Strong documentation skills — reconciliation workpapers, audit checklists, SOPs, and findings reports. A valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and willingness to travel independently to clinic sites across Western North Carolina. Working knowledge of
HIPAA/PHI
handling preferred; proficiency with Microsoft 365. Nice to Have Experience in a multi-entity or multi-location accounting environment. Healthcare revenue cycle auditing, charge integrity review, or clinical documentation compliance experience. Experience developing and delivering staff training, job aids, or SOPs. Familiarity with payer documentation requirements in an ambulatory care setting. Grant accounting or restricted fund experience in a nonprofit or healthcare setting. Work Environment You'll split time between an administrative office and clinic environments, with regular local travel (about 20-40%). Expect a mix of desk work — sitting, typing, close visual review — and on-site clinic visits that involve standing and walking. Reasonable accommodations are available to perform essential job functions. We are an equal opportunity employer and do not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, religion, color, national origin, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
