AtWork Winston-Salem is recruiting for a well-established, locally owned public accounting firm seeking an experienced Staff Accountant / Senior Accountant to join its close-knit team. This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys working directly with clients in a relaxed, collaborative office environment. The firm specializes in accounting, payroll, and tax services for small businesses and individuals. While tax experience is highly desirable, a CPA license is not required. The business is looking for someone who can help oversee the firm's day-to-day accounting, payroll, and tax operations while providing outstanding service to clients. Position Summary This role combines hands-on accounting responsibilities with client interaction and office coordination. The successful candidate will be an experienced accounting professional who is highly organized, accurate, dependable, and comfortable managing multiple priorities throughout the year. Approximately 75% of the position focuses on accounting, payroll, and tax preparation, with the remaining 25% involving office coordination, client communication, and helping keep daily operations running smoothly. Responsibilities Prepare accounting "write-up" work and maintain accurate financial records for business clients. Process and oversee payroll for multiple clients. Prepare and review payroll tax filings and related reports. Prepare individual income tax returns. Assist with business tax preparation as experience allows. Perform account reconciliations and maintain general ledger accuracy. Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, providing professional, courteous, and timely service. Coordinate client information, documentation, and deadlines. Help oversee daily workflow and office operations. Support the owner by ensuring projects are completed accurately and on schedule. Assist in maintaining accountability across office processes and internal workflow. Perform additional accounting and administrative duties as needed. Qualifications Several years of accounting experience, preferably in a public accounting firm. Experience with payroll processing and payroll tax reporting. Experience preparing individual tax returns; business tax experience is a plus. Strong understanding of accounting principles and bookkeeping. Office management or supervisory experience is preferred but not required. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Strong attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy. Professional, friendly, and polished communication skills. Ability to manage multiple client deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Office applications. CPA designation is not required . Enrolled Agent (EA) designation is welcomed but not required.
