Staff Accountant Allied Mineral Products is a leading manufacturer of monolithic refractories worldwide, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. We are currently seeking a Staff Accountant who is responsible for performing advanced accounting activities that support the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of the Company's financial reporting process. This role prepares and analyzes financial information, performs complex account reconciliations, coordinates assigned month-end and year-end close activities, assists with audit support, and ensures compliance with accounting policies, internal controls, and regulatory requirements. The Staff Accountant serves as a key technical accounting resource within the Corporate Accounting team, partnering with business leaders and functional departments to resolve accounting issues, improve financial processes, and support strategic initiatives. This position operates independently within assigned areas of responsibility while working closely with the Corporate Accounting Manager to ensure accurate financial reporting and efficient accounting operations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities Financial Reporting and Analysis:
Prepare, analyze, and maintain financial records, account analyses, reconciliations, and supporting schedules to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting. Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and provide variance analysis, explanations, and recommendations to management. Support the Corporate Accounting Manager in evaluating financial results and identifying significant trends and accounting matters.
Month-End and Year-End Close Activities:
Coordinate and perform assigned month-end and year-end close responsibilities, including journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and supporting documentation. Review financial information for completeness and accuracy, investigate discrepancies, and propose corrective actions to ensure compliance with established accounting policies and procedures.
Account Reconciliations and General Ledger Management:
Prepare and maintain complex balance sheet reconciliations and supporting analyses. Monitor account activity, investigate variances, resolve reconciling items, and ensure account balances are accurate, properly supported, and recorded in accordance with company policies and accounting standards.
Audit and Compliance Support:
Support internal and external audit activities by preparing schedules, gathering supporting documentation, responding to auditor requests, and assisting with the resolution of audit findings. Maintain compliance with accounting policies, internal controls, and regulatory requirements to support the integrity of financial reporting.
Cross-Functional Partnership:
Collaborate with finance, operations, procurement, sales, manufacturing, and other business functions to address accounting matters, improve processes, and ensure accurate financial reporting. Develop and maintain strong professional relationships across the organization to support departmental and company objectives.
Technical Expertise and Continuous Improvement:
Serve as a subject matter expert in assigned accounting areas and remain current on accounting standards, company policies, and best practices. Actively contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and the overall effectiveness of the accounting function.
Systems and Process Improvement:
Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, strengthen internal controls, and enhance reporting efficiency. Participate in automation initiatives, ERP enhancements, and system implementation activities. Develop and maintain accounting procedures, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and process documentation to support consistency, scalability, and operational excellence. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in accounting required. CPA is desired but not required. 2 years of experience preferred but would consider recent college graduates with internship experience in accounting. Experience utilizing ERP systems is preferred. Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must have a cheerful outlook, excellent people skills, and demonstrate professionalism. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office. Must have strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and adhere to strict deadlines. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders across departments and organizational levels.
