Staff Accountant About the Opportunity A growing nonprofit healthcare organization in the Portland metro area is seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join its finance team. This position works closely with the Accounting Manager and leadership team to support day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, grant compliance, and organizational financial management. The ideal candidate will have strong accounting knowledge, experience with month-end close processes, and a passion for supporting a mission-driven healthcare organization that serves diverse communities. Position Summary The Staff Accountant is responsible for maintaining the general ledger, preparing financial reports, supporting grant tracking and compliance activities, assisting with audits, and ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting. This role plays a key part in maintaining the financial integrity of the organization while supporting ongoing growth and operational excellence. Key Responsibilities Accounting & Financial Reporting Manage the General Ledger and Chart of Accounts Perform monthly and year-end closing activities Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting Prepare monthly financial statements and management reports Analyze financial and statistical data to support decision-making Maintain and reconcile fixed asset records Grants, Compliance & Audits Track grant expenditures and assist with grant reporting requirements Support federal, state, and other compliance reporting Assist with annual financial audits by preparing schedules and supporting documentation Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and internal controls Reporting & Data Management Develop, maintain, and update financial reports utilizing Excel Support organizational reporting initiatives and data analysis Assist with financial system enhancements and software conversions as needed Team Collaboration Collaborate with finance, operations, and leadership teams Cross-train and support various accounting functions Contribute to process improvement initiatives Perform additional accounting and finance duties as assigned Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Accounting 2-4 years of accounting experience Experience with accrual-based accounting Experience preparing month-end financial statements Advanced Excel skills, including reporting and data analysis Experience using accounting software Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines Strong written and verbal communication skills Preferred Accounting experience within a healthcare, nonprofit, or community-based organization CPA designation or Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field Experience with grant accounting and compliance reporting Experience with revenue cycle management Experience with Sage Intacct or similar ERP/accounting platforms Experience supporting financial audits Skills & Competencies Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite High level of accuracy and attention to detail Ability to maintain confidential financial information Excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills Strong critical thinking and analytical capabilities Ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment Compensation & Benefits Competitive salary based on experience Opportunity to work within a mission-driven healthcare organization Collaborative and supportive team environment Professional growth and development opportunities This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional seeking a meaningful role within a growing healthcare organization dedicated to improving community health outcomes through high-quality, patient-focused care.
