About Us Quality Back Office (QBO) is a growing, multi-office accounting and advisory firm serving small businesses across many industries, including medical practices, real estate, restaurants, and many more. We handle bookkeeping, tax, payroll, and CFO-level advisory for our clients. We are owner-operated, not private-equity run, and we are building our Durham office around experienced people who want real client relationships and a clear path to lead. The Role We are hiring an experienced CPA to own a portfolio of small-business clients from the books through the return. You will be the senior technical resource in the Durham office. You will review work prepared by staff and bookkeepers, handle the complex engagements yourself, and be the person our clients call when they need an answer. This is a hands-on role with a direct line to firm leadership and room to grow into a manager or partner-track position as the office expands. What You'll Do Prepare and review business returns (1120-S, 1065, 1120) and the individual returns (1040) of business owners, including multi-state filings Review monthly and quarterly bookkeeping, reconciliations, and financial statements prepared by staff Prepare year-end tax provisions, adjusting entries, and fixed-asset and depreciation schedules Lead tax planning and projection meetings with owners: entity selection, estimated payments, owner compensation, retirement planning, and year-end strategy Handle IRS and NC Department of Revenue notices, correspondence, and payment plans Advise on payroll and sales and use tax compliance Train and review the work of staff accountants and bookkeepers Help improve our workflows, checklists, and technology as we grow What You Bring Active CPA license in good standing (NC, or able to obtain NC licensure by reciprocity) 5-10 years of public accounting experience, mostly serving small and mid-sized privately held businesses Strong preparation and review skills on S-corp, partnership, C-corp, and individual returns Working knowledge of QuickBooks Online and/or Xero, and professional tax software such as UltraTax, Lacerte, CCH Axcess, or Drake Comfort explaining tax and financial results to business owners in plain English Organized and dependable through deadline season, with good judgment on when to escalate Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field Nice to Have Industry experience with medical practices, real estate (rental portfolios, 1031 exchanges, cost segregation), or restaurants Familiarity with AppFolio or Yardi Experience supervising or mentoring staff Practice-management tools such as Canopy, Karbon, or TaxDome What We Offer Base salary of $80,000 - $90,000 based on experience 401(k) Hybrid schedule after onboarding Leadership opportunity in a growing office, with a manager or partner track for the right person Schedule Monday to Friday.
