full-time Organizational Overview Uplift Alliance is an independent 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor host organization based in West Baltimore and affiliated with the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). We provide reliable fiscal sponsorship services including fiduciary oversight, financial management, compliance guidance, and operational support, so charitable projects and emerging nonprofits can focus on delivering impact. Uplift Alliance exists to expand Baltimore's fiscal sponsorship capacity and help mission-driven leaders and organizations build strong, sustainable initiatives that advance communities. We are a small, collaborative team that values accuracy, responsiveness, transparency, and excellent service to the projects we sponsor. Position Summary The Senior Accountant is responsible for day-to-day accounting activities and oversight for Uplift Alliance and its fiscally sponsored projects. This position ensures accurate and timely financial reporting, transaction processing, account reconciliations, month-end close, and compliance with applicable accounting standards and organizational policies. Because we serve multiple fiscally sponsored projects, the Senior Accountant will work across a diverse portfolio of accounts and will need to be highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing competing priorities. Key Responsibilities Accounting & Financial Operations Record and maintain accurate financial transactions in the organization's accounting system. Process accounts payable, accounts receivable, deposits, and other routine accounting activity. Prepare and post journal entries and maintain appropriate supporting documentation. Reconcile bank, credit card, investment, and other balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis. Ensure smooth monthly financial close processes. Monitor transactions for accuracy, proper coding, and compliance with organizational policies. Maintain organized and complete accounting records for the organization and fiscally sponsored projects. Assist with tracking restricted funds, grants, and project-specific revenues and expenses. Identify discrepancies and work with colleagues and project representatives to resolve them. Fiscal Sponsorship Support Maintain accurate financial records for assigned fiscally sponsored projects. Respond to questions from colleagues regarding project account balances, transactions, and financial procedures. Assist colleagues and project representatives in understanding financial reports and resolving accounting questions. Ensure transactions are appropriately allocated among projects, programs, grants, and funding restrictions. Support financial reporting and information requests for sponsored projects. Financial Reporting & Compliance Prepare and distribute routine financial reports and account statements. Assist with grant and project financial reporting as needed. Support preparation for the annual audit and provide documentation requested by auditors. Assist with tax filings, regulatory reporting, and other compliance activities as needed. Maintain documentation and records in accordance with applicable nonprofit accounting requirements and internal policies. Support in maintaining effective internal controls. Team & Administrative Support Collaborate closely with other staff to improve accounting processes and workflows. Provide responsive, professional customer service to colleagues and fiscally sponsored projects. Maintain confidentiality of financial and organizational information. Participate in special projects, process improvements, and other team initiatives as assigned.

Qualifications Required:

Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field 5-7 years of relevant accounting experience. Strong understanding of basic accounting principles and practices. Experience with account reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close. Experience with nonprofit financial statements and restricted funds. Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy. Excellent organizational and time-management skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a small-team environment. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel. Ability to handle confidential information with discretion. Commitment to the mission and values of the nonprofit sector.

Preferred:

Experience with fiscal sponsorship, grant accounting, or fund accounting. Experience with Sage Intacct and BILL Experience supporting audits or complex financial reporting. Skills and Competencies Accounting & reporting excellence: You can confidently execute month-end close, GAAP-aligned fund accounting, reconciliations, and clear financial statement/report package preparation. Systems & process improvement: You have strong excel skills, accounting systems fluency, ability to build scalable workflows, and SOP creation.

Analytical:

You notice inconsistencies and follow transactions through to resolution. You can investigate discrepancies, understand financial information, and identify solutions.

Detail-oriented & Organized:

You can manage financial activity across multiple projects without losing track of deadlines or details.

Service-oriented:

You enjoy helping colleagues and sponsored projects navigate financial processes. You appreciate the role that strong financial administration plays in helping nonprofit organizations achieve their missions. Working Location This is a hybrid position with a minimum of 2-3 days in office at the University of Maryland Baltimore Campus at 620 W. Lexington Street, Baltimore, MD 21201. Compensation and Benefits The compensation range for this position is $77,000 - $92,000. Benefits include health insurance, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, a holiday schedule aligned with the State of Maryland, and two weeks of paid time off.
