The Company operates ready-mix concrete plants, pugmills, aggregate material yards, rail facilities, and a barge unloading facility, supported by a fleet of drum and volumetric concrete trucks. Modern Concrete & Materials is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join our accounting team at our headquarters in Beaumont, Texas. Reporting directly to the Controller, this position will play a key role in the Company's day-to-day accounting operations, month-end close, financial reporting, inventory and cost accounting, and internal controls. The ideal candidate will be hands-on, highly analytical, detail-oriented, and capable of independently managing significant accounting responsibilities in a fast-paced, multi-location operating company. This individual must have a strong desire to understand the Company's operations and how operational activities flow through the financial statements. The Senior Accountant will work closely with the Controller and other accounting personnel to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting, strengthen internal controls, improve accounting processes, and support the continued growth of the Company. Duties Perform and take ownership of assigned month-end and year-end close responsibilities, including journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, supporting schedules, and account analysis. Maintain and reconcile inventory and cost accounting records across multiple ready-mix plants, aggregate yards, and other operating locations. Prepare and post transactions related to inventory purchases, consumption, transfers, and adjustments. Analyze inventory activity and physical inventory variances and investigate significant discrepancies. Assist in analyzing material costs, freight, production costs, and other operating expenses to ensure accurate product and location-level financial reporting. Prepare and review accounting records, financial statements, and monthly financial reporting schedules. Assist the Controller with analysis of financial results, including margins, operating performance, account fluctuations, and cost variances. Investigate unusual financial results or accounting discrepancies and communicate findings to the Controller. Maintain general ledger accounts and ensure transactions are properly recorded, classified, and supported. Work closely with Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable/Credit, Billing, Payroll, and other accounting personnel to ensure transactions are accurately recorded and month-end deadlines are met. Perform and/or review recurring accounting functions including payroll entries, sales tax reporting, 1099 preparation, corporate card and expense accounting, and other assigned accounting activities. Prepare schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation required for external audits, tax preparation, lender reporting, and other financial reporting requirements. Assist the Controller in developing, documenting, implementing, and monitoring internal accounting controls, policies, and procedures. Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting, efficiency, and automation. Maintain confidentiality of Company financial information. Communicate effectively and professionally with accounting personnel, management, plant personnel, operations teams, customers, vendors, auditors, and other external partners. Develop a thorough understanding of the Company's operations, accounting systems, and business processes. Perform other accounting and financial responsibilities as assigned by the Controller Minimum Requirements Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field. 5-10 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably including significant cost accounting and inventory accounting experience. Strong understanding of GAAP, general ledger accounting, journal entries, account reconciliations, accrual accounting, and financial reporting. Experience working with month-end and year-end close processes. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate financial and operational variances. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Experience with accounting and ERP systems. QuickBooks Online experience is preferred but not required. Demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Highly detail-oriented, organized, reliable, and accountable. Ability and willingness to work additional hours when necessary, during month-end, year-end, audits, or other critical accounting periods. Preferred Qualifications Experience in construction materials, manufacturing, heavy civil construction, transportation, aggregates, ready-mix concrete, or another asset-intensive, multi-location operating business. Experience with inventory and cost accounting in an operational environment. Experience improving accounting processes, internal controls, reporting, or automation. Experience working within a growing privately held company. What we're looking for We are looking for more than someone who can accurately record transactions.
