Job Description

Overview Fat-Cat Fish Company, a highly respected Pacific Northwest seafood processing company, is seeking an experienced, hands-on Senior Accountant to support our VP of Finance & Operations. Position Summary We require a highly skilled, hands-on Senior Accountant to support the VP of Finance & Operations and CEO with the daily accounting and financial operations. This role requires a strong accounting foundation, attention to detail, and the ability to work across the full accounting cycle, including accounts payable, general ledger accounting, reconciliations, month-end close, inventory accounting, financial statement review, year-end CPA support, and system implementation. The ideal candidate is organized, analytical, system-oriented, and able to identify and resolve accounting discrepancies. This is a hands-on position requiring the ability to shift between transactional work and higher-level financial analysis as business needs require. Key Responsibilities
  • Support the VP of Finance & Operations and CEO with the daily accounting and special projects.
  • Perform accounting functions throughout the full accounting cycle, including accounts payable, general ledger accounting, journal entries, accruals, prepaid, and account reconciliations.
  • Assist with and perform month-end and year-end closing activities.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules.
  • Review profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and general ledger activity for accuracy, completeness, unusual activity, and potential missing or misclassified transactions.
  • Independently research and resolve accounting discrepancies.
  • Review transactions and supporting documentation to ensure proper accounting treatment and general ledger classification.
  • Assist with inventory accounting, inventory reconciliations, cost of goods sold, and related manufacturing accounting activities.
  • Work with production, logistics, sales, and other operational personnel to understand transactions and ensure operational activity is accurately reflected in the accounting records.
  • Assist with accounts payable processing, including invoice entry, coding, vendor account research, and resolution of discrepancies.
  • Support accounts receivable, cash management, banking, and other accounting functions as needed.
  • Ability to prepare monthly financial statements, management reports, and financial analysis.
  • Maintain organized accounting records and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with periodic and annual financial and tax preparation by gathering schedules, reconciliations, supporting documentation, and other information requested by the company's CPA firm.
  • Assist with audits, regulatory requirements, and other financial information requests as needed.
  • Support the development, documentation, and improvement of accounting procedures and internal controls.
  • Assist with accounting and ERP system projects, including the company's planned migration from SAP Business One to QuickBooks Enterprise.
  • Participate in data cleanup, account and master-data mapping, reconciliation, testing, validation, and other activities necessary to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial information during system conversion.
  • Perform other accounting, reporting, and analytical projects as requested by the VP of Finance & Operations or CEO. Required Qualifications
  • 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, with significant hands-on general ledger and financial accounting responsibilities.
  • Solid foundation in accounting principles and accrual-based accounting. Proven experience with general ledger accounting, journal entries, account reconciliations, month-end close, and financial statement preparation and review.
  • Ability to read and review financial statements and identify potential inaccuracies, omissions, unusual balances, or inconsistencies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to research transactions and discrepancies through resolution.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including formulas, lookups, pivot tables, data analysis, and reconciliation of large data sets.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and ongoing projects.
  • Strong systems aptitude and the ability to learn and navigate accounting, ERP, inventory, and operational systems.
  • Comfortable working directly within accounting systems and underlying transaction details.
  • Ability to work independently while communicating effectively with the VP of Finance & Operations and other departments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to work hands-on at all levels of the accounting function as business needs require. Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • Understanding of fish or seafood manufacturing operations is a plus and will receive preference.
  • Experience with inventory accounting and cost of goods sold in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with SAP Business One and/or QuickBooks Enterprise is highly desirable.
  • Previous involvement in accounting or ERP system conversion or implementation is a plus.
What Success Looks Like A successful Senior Accountant will become a trusted accounting resource to the VP of Finance & Operations and CEO and will be able to independently handle accounting responsibilities while recognizing when an issue requires further investigation or escalation. This individual will bring a strong accounting foundation, attention to detail, organization, systems aptitude, and a willingness to dig into the details. They will understand not only how to process accounting transactions, but also how those transactions affect inventory, cost of goods sold, the general ledger, and the company's financial statements.
