We are hiring a hands-on Construction Controller who is a licensed CPA and can strengthen our accounting systems while keeping the daily work moving. This position is for someone who can work inside the details, find and correct accounting problems, close the books, explain the numbers clearly, and build practical controls that our team can follow. You will work with our current accounting staff, including the team member responsible for project costing, purchasing, and receipt entry. You will review and improve that workflow while preserving the operational knowledge already on the team. We use QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2024 and are improving how purchasing, receipts, job costs, and approvals are tracked in our CRM. Construction accounting and QuickBooks Desktop experience are required.
WHAT YOU WILL OWN
- Review the current books and identify discrepancies, including balance-sheet issues, incorrect job costs, misclassified transactions, reconciliation errors, and incomplete supporting records.
- Clean up and correctly reclassify historical transactions where needed.
- Reconcile bank accounts, company credit cards, loans, and other balance-sheet accounts.
- Manage the accounting calendar and complete an accurate, timely month-end close.
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, progress invoicing, customer payments, collections, and receivable aging.
- Review payroll accounting and the allocation of labor costs to projects.
- Review job costs against budgets and help management understand project profitability.
- Produce useful financial reports, including profit and loss by job, balance sheet, cash-flow reporting, and overbilling or underbilling analysis when applicable.
- Maintain a practical chart of accounts and item list that support construction reporting.
- Prepare or coordinate required sales-tax, quarterly, and annual accounting work within the authority assigned to the role.
- Strengthen purchasing and credit-card controls so every transaction has a purchaser, business purpose, project or overhead code, receipt, approval when required, and a documented exception path.
- Build clear checklists, written procedures, weekly exception reports, and a short management dashboard.
- Work with management and the current team to improve the CRM-based receipt and purchasing workflow.
- Coordinate with outside tax, payroll, insurance, and other professional advisers when needed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Active CPA license in good standing. License status will be verified before hire.
- At least 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
- At least 3 years of hands-on QuickBooks Desktop experience.
- Direct construction accounting experience, including job costing, progress billing, retention, reconciliations, financial reporting, and payroll or labor-cost allocation.
- Ability to find the cause of accounting discrepancies and carry corrections through to completion.
- Strong understanding of internal controls and separation of duties in a small or midsize business.
- Ability to explain financial information clearly to owners, project staff, and accounting team members.
- Reliable follow-through, sound judgment, and respect for confidential financial and employee information.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- QuickBooks ProAdvisor certification or advanced QuickBooks training.
- QuickBooks Enterprise or construction edition experience.
- Construction software integrations, change orders, project billing, and high-volume company-card activity.
- Building accounting procedures and dashboards for a growing company.
TECHNOLOGY AND AI READINESS
You must be comfortable using cloud-based work systems and company-approved AI tools such as ChatGPT to help organize work, create checklists, research routine questions, improve reporting, and make recurring processes more efficient. You do not need a personal paid AI account. You must verify AI-assisted work, remain responsible for every financial output, and keep confidential financial, payroll, employee, banking, tax, customer, and vendor information out of tools that are not approved for that data.
SCHEDULE AND BENEFITS
- Approximately 20-30 hours per week to start.
- Flexible weekday scheduling arranged around payroll, billing, month-end, and other accounting deadlines.
- In-person work at our Everett office.
- Opportunity to grow into a full-time position; no conversion date is guaranteed.
- Washington paid sick leave is provided as required by law.
- Employees who move into an eligible full-time position receive health, dental, vision, and paid-holiday benefits after 90 days, and vacation eligibility after one year.
