Job Description

The Accounting Supervisor oversees Chancery Accounting Services and supervises bookkeeping staff who provide accounting support to parishes, schools, and cemeteries throughout the Diocese. This full time, exempt role assists with financial reporting, account reconciliations, audits, budgeting support, and internal financial reviews while ensuring compliance with diocesan policies and accounting standards. The Accounting Supervisor serves as a key resource to parish and diocesan staff by providing accounting guidance, enhancing financial processes, and supporting organizational excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Supervision Supervise a team of nine bookkeeping employees, including four on-site and five remote staff members. Provide training, coaching, workflow coordination, and performance oversight. Promote best practices and consistency in accounting procedures. Accounting & Financial Reporting Assist with monthly closes for Chancery Accounting Services clients. Prepare and review monthly financial reports. Review accounting records and prepare or review journal entries. Review and approve accounts payable payment requests and ACH transactions. Reconcile diocesan bank accounts, investment accounts, receivables, assessments, and other assigned balance sheet accounts. Parish & Diocesan Support Provide accounting guidance and support to parish and diocesan bookkeepers. Maintain diocesan business manager, bookkeeper, and pastor contact records. Support parish, school, cemetery, and diocesan audit activities. Serve as backup support for payroll processing as needed. Compliance & Process Improvement Complete quarterly financial reviews of parishes, schools, and cemeteries within established diocesan timelines. Review supporting reconciliations and financial documentation. Ensure compliance with diocesan financial policies and accounting standards. Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, internal controls, and financial processes. Systems Administration Administer the Diocese's Amazon Business account, including user access, approvals, and reconciliations. Provide support and training for Martus budgeting software. Assist users with budget preparation, troubleshooting, and reporting.
Qualifications:
Required Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field. Minimum five years of progressively responsible accounting experience. Prior supervisory experience. Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. Intermediate to advanced Excel skills, including formulas, pivot tables, and financial reporting. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Teams, Excel, and OneDrive. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment. Preferred Master's degree and/or CPA designation. Experience in public accounting, auditing, internal auditing, nonprofit accounting, or related fields. Experience with Sage Intacct. Knowledge of church or nonprofit financial operations.
