Sometimes moving to a smaller CPA firm isn't about wanting less responsibility. It's about wanting your responsibility to actually matter. This 25-person CPA firm is growing, and they've reached an interesting point. They've hired plenty of people at entry level over the last few years. What they're missing now are the experienced people in the middle who can take more ownership and help develop the people coming through behind them. They're looking for an Audit Senior to join a practice heavily focused on local government. Think townships, villages and school districts, with some nonprofit exposure alongside that. Governmental experience would obviously be useful, but they're flexible. If you're coming from public accounting with solid audit experience and you're interested in moving into this space, they'd rather have the conversation than rule someone out because their background isn't identical. The firm itself is smaller, which means you're not several layers removed from the people running it. The Partners are still billable, they're around the office and there's very much an open door culture. They've had people join from bigger firms and Big 4 who wanted a different version of public accounting. One where picking your kids up from school or having plans outside work doesn't feel incompatible with having a career. Peak season is generally around 45 to 50 hours, with 55 being much more of a maximum than an expectation. Outside of the busier periods, things settle back down. The work is predominantly with clients across the south suburbs of Chicago. Audit naturally means spending time at client sites, so around 75% of the time can be out with clients depending on the engagement, with the remainder spent in one of the firm's offices. Benefits include medical, dental and vision coverage, alongside an annual HSA contribution. There's also life insurance, EAP support and nine paid holidays, including your birthday. PTO works on a tiered structure but they're willing to discuss it during the interview process. If you're just browsing the job boards and you haven't dusted off your resume yet, that's not a problem. You can give me a call first on 312-564-5028. If you prefer, you could drop me a connection or message on LinkedIn (Lucy Weibel at Distinct), and we can pick things up there. If you've read this advert and you're unsure whether to apply because you don't have every bit of experience listed, I'd still encourage you to apply. We support the CPA firms we partner with in building diverse, inclusive and equitable workplaces, and the right attitude often goes further than ticking every box. If this position isn't quite right, it's highly likely I'll be working on another Public Accounting opportunity that is.
