Job Description
As the Chief Fiscal officer of California, the fourth largest economy in the world, Controller Malia M. Cohen is responsible for accountability and disbursement of the state's financial resources. Controller Cohen also safeguards many types of financial property until claimed by the rightful owners, independently audits government agencies that spend state funds, and administers the payroll system for state government employees and California State University employees. She serves on 70 boards and commissions with authority ranging from state public land management to crime victim compensation. The Controller is a member of numerous financing authorities, and fiscal and financial oversight entities including the Franchise Tax Board and Board of Equalization. She also serves on the boards of the nation's two largest public pension funds. The Controller is one of eight statewide constitutional officials who are elected every four years in California. The State Controller's Office is seeking to hire two (2) student assistants to work part-time in our Audits Operations Bureau, which audits all claims/vouchers for correctness, legality, and availability of funds. Both Student Assistants will be assigned to verify claims/vouchers for compliance with California's Constitution and various other applicable laws and regulations . The Student Assistants will learn state and local government accounting and/or program compliance. In this role, the students will have an opportunity to gain effective communication, critical thinking, professional etiquette, and audit related skills. Conditions of Employment This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. Prerequisites Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer). Compensation $18.00

00 per hour. Minimum Qualifications Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. Strong communication skills, including active listening and the ability to prepare clear and concise emails, memorandums, and reports. Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external parties and convey complex information in a correct, clear, and professional manner. Ability to adapt and remain flexible in response to changing workloads and priorities. Demonstrates initiative and self-motivation, including taking ownership of projects and maintaining a positive professional attitude. Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, including the ability to analyze situations, evaluate data, and draw sound conclusions. Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to prioritize workload effectively, maintain strong organization, work under pressure and time constraints, and remain proactive and adaptable.
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of the principles of public administration and executive & organizational communication. Experience with purpose-driven writing and editing that is clear, concise, and accurately explains the complexity and services of the SCO.
Ability to complete deadline-driven project management assignments and translate complex financial and government information into plain language for diverse audiences. Duties and Responsibilities Administrative & Organizational Duties Review and determine whether claims are approved or denied based on established audit criteria and procedures. Complete additional deliverables and assignments as determined by the needs of each audit project. Support other projects and activities related to claim audits. Research & Data Gathering Conduct research and gather information needed to support claim audits. Analyze and compare claims against established criteria to support analysis and compliance. Determine claim approval or denial based on analysis and comparison to applicable criteria for analysis and compliance. Communication & Collaboration Communicate and collaborate internally with SCO audit staff to support audit activities and deliverables. Communicate and collaborate with external auditees under the supervision of SCO audit staff. Support coordination and follow-up with external auditees as needed to complete audit-related activities. Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation. Working Conditions Work is performed in a hybrid environment. Students/Employees will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI Work from Home Agreement. The decision to permit an employee to work from home is at the discretion of the supervisor or employer and may, at any time and with or without cause, unilaterally terminate the option to work from home.
