Job Description
Description We are looking for a Bookkeeper to support a non-profit organization in San Francisco, California through a hands-on Contract position. This role is ideal for someone who brings strong core accounting experience, can manage day-to-day financial activity with accuracy, and is comfortable working in a fully onsite environment. The person in this position will partner closely with the Office Manager, help bring account reconciliations up to date, and contribute to reliable month-end and year-end financial operations.
Responsibilities:
- Reconcile bank accounts and resolve a significant backlog of outstanding items to restore timely and accurate cash reporting.
- Prepare manual journal entries and complete balance sheet account reviews to support monthly close activities.
- Record and maintain investment activity, including mark-to-market adjustments, with careful attention to accuracy.
- Process accounts payable transactions, monitor incoming and outgoing payments, and assist with routine accounts receivable and operational bookkeeping tasks.
- Manage monthly sales tax filings and prepayments while maintaining supporting documentation for compliance purposes.
- Prepare required business filings, including the annual Business Property Statement, and assist with workers' compensation administration.
- Track membership-related revenue, maintain accounting for space rental activity, and support financial recordkeeping for bar and restaurant operations.
- Oversee ordering coordination and inventory record maintenance for beverage stock, merchandise, and office or operational supplies.
- Use QuickBooks Desktop and related operating systems to maintain organized financial records and support daily accounting workflows.
- Provide accounting support in an environment with outsourced payroll by assisting with payroll-related coordination for a small employee population. Requirements
- Proven bookkeeping experience with strong bank reconciliation skills in a high-volume or detail-intensive setting.
- Solid understanding of general accounting principles, including journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Experience using QuickBooks, preferably QuickBooks Desktop, in an accounting environment that requires strong attention to detail.
- Working knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and routine bookkeeping processes.
- Ability to manage investment accounting activities, including mark-to-market adjustments.
- Basic to intermediate Excel skills for reviewing data, organizing schedules, and supporting reconciliations.
- Comfortable working onsite five days per week in San Francisco, California.
- Prior experience in a non-profit organization or a background in public accounting is highly valued.
