Job Summary:
The Product Compliance Manager manages product safety certification and regulatory compliance activities for MPI Energy's battery, UPS, and energy storage product lines. This is a hands-on individual contributor role that manages agency programs from quote to listing, working closely with Product Engineering on certification planning, and makes sure our products can be sold, shipped, and installed in the markets our customers need. This role is the company's primary point of contact with UL Solutions, Intertek/ETL, CSA, TUV, and other NRTL and international certification bodies. The Product Compliance Manager partners with Product Engineering early in the design cycle so compliance is built in, not bolted on, and serves as a primary resource for customers, sales, and field teams This position is not responsible for occupational health and safety, OSHA programs, or facilities. Those functions are covered by the Safety & Facilities Manager. Key Responsibilities Certification Strategy & Program Management Maintain the certification roadmap for new and existing products across VRLA, LFP, UPS, and BESS lines, in partnership with Product Engineering leadership Partner with Product Engineering at concept stage to identify applicable standards and certification paths (UL, IEC, CSA, NFPA, UN, and international) Coordinate with certification bodies; obtain and compare quotations, scopes of work, budgets, and schedules Manage submissions, testing, witness testing, agency findings, and corrective actions through to listing Use CB Scheme and existing reports to speed up multi-market approvals and reduce retesting cost Standards & Regulatory Expertise Build and maintain working knowledge of standards relevant to our products, including
UL 1973, UL 9540, UL 9540A, UL 1778, UL 1642, IEC 62619, IEC 62040, UN
38.3, and NFPA 855, and serve as a go-to resource for internal teams Monitor changes to standards, codes, and regulations and assess impact on current and planned products Advise on code and AHJ requirements that affect product installation and customer acceptance Change Control & Ongoing Compliance Review engineering changes, component substitutions, and supplier changes for certification impact before release Verify certification status of critical supplier components (cells, BMS, enclosures, electrical components) Maintain certification files, listings, renewals, and follow-up services; host and prepare for factory inspections Maintain labeling, markings, and product documentation to agency requirements Customer & Commercial Support Respond to customer compliance questionnaires, certification requests, and declarations of conformity Support RFPs and bids with certification documentation and technical compliance answers Support shipping and transport compliance for lithium products (UN 38.3, hazardous materials documentation) Metrics & Reporting Track and report active certifications, first-pass test rate, open findings, time to certification, and cost vs. budget Maintain the compliance records system so the program is audit-ready at all times Qualifications Required 5+ years in product safety, product compliance, or regulatory compliance for electrical or electronic products Direct, hands-on experience taking products through UL, Intertek/ETL, CSA, or other NRTL certification Working knowledge of UL, IEC, and NFPA product safety standards Ability to read and interpret schematics, drawings, specifications, and test reports Proven ability to manage multiple certification projects, budgets, and deadlines at once Strong communication skills across engineering, customers, suppliers, and certification bodies Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic recordkeeping systems Preferred Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Electronics Engineering (or equivalent experience) Certification experience with batteries, energy storage, UPS, power conversion, or industrial control products Experience with
UL 9540A
large-scale fire testing Experience with CB Scheme and international market access (IEC, CE, and other regions) Experience supporting a product development organization from design through launch Experience with ISO 9001 or other ISO-based management systems iNARTE Product Safety Engineer or similar credential Key Traits for Success Self-starter who can manage certification projects independently and help improve processes over time Plans ahead, flagging certification needs early in the design cycle Detail-oriented with a strong eye for documentation and quality Clear communicator who can translate standards into practical guidance for engineers and customers
