Full-Time Position Summary We are seeking an experienced Safety Director to lead and oversee our transportation safety and regulatory compliance program. This position is responsible for ensuring company-wide compliance with FMCSA and DOT regulations , supervising the Safety Department, monitoring driver and equipment compliance, managing DOT audits and regulatory requirements, overseeing insurance and claims processes, and identifying opportunities to continuously improve the company's safety performance. The ideal candidate is highly organized, proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable taking ownership of compliance across a multi-entity transportation operation. This individual should be capable of identifying potential compliance issues before they become problems and ensuring appropriate corrective actions are completed. Key Responsibilities
FMCSA & DOT
Compliance Oversee compliance with applicable FMCSA regulations, including Parts 40, 382, 383, 387, and 390-397. Monitor regulatory changes and recommend updates to company policies and procedures. Oversee the company's Drug & Alcohol Testing Program, including required testing and recordkeeping. Ensure FMCSA-required documentation and records are complete, accurate, and audit-ready. Serve as a primary point of contact for DOT officials and regulatory agencies. Driver Qualification & Safety Audit Driver Qualification (DQ) files for completeness and regulatory compliance. Audit driver onboarding and safety orientation processes. Monitor ongoing driver safety education and training. Conduct compliance audits related to Hours of Service (HOS), vehicle inspections, and company safety procedures. Identify compliance deficiencies and ensure corrective actions are completed. DOT Audits & Regulatory Reviews Coordinate and manage DOT audits, compliance reviews, and roadside inspection follow-up. Conduct internal safety and compliance audits. Maintain documentation necessary to support regulatory reviews. Develop corrective action plans when deficiencies or compliance risks are identified. Safety Department Leadership Provide leadership and oversight to the Safety Department. Establish priorities, accountability, and deadlines for safety-related responsibilities. Ensure inspections, permits, registrations, claims, compliance documentation, and other safety functions are completed accurately and on time. Work closely with Operations, Recruiting, Shop, Accounting, and Executive Management. CSA & Safety Performance Monitor CSA scores and Safety Measurement System (SMS) performance. Identify trends and areas of increased safety exposure. Develop and implement action plans designed to improve safety performance. Provide management with regular reporting regarding safety KPIs, inspections, compliance issues, claims, and corrective actions. Accident, Incident & Claims Management Oversee accident and incident reporting, investigations, documentation, and corrective actions. Coordinate timely reporting of claims to insurance carriers, legal advisors, and other required parties. Ensure claims and incidents are properly documented within company systems. Monitor claims activity and provide management with relevant reporting and trends. Insurance, Permits & Registrations Coordinate commercial insurance policies, renewals, and loss reporting. Oversee permits and registrations across company entities. Monitor tractor and trailer registration requirements, including applicable U.S. and Mexican plates and renewals. Ensure equipment and compliance information is accurately maintained within company systems. Oversee required transportation-related filings, including IFTA, Form 2290, and applicable state filings and permits. Qualifications Previous experience in trucking safety, DOT compliance, transportation compliance, or fleet safety required. Strong working knowledge of FMCSA and DOT regulations . Experience with Driver Qualification files, HOS, Drug & Alcohol compliance, DOT inspections, and regulatory audits. Experience managing or supporting DOT compliance reviews. Understanding of CSA/SMS scores and safety performance management. Experience working with commercial trucking insurance and accident/claims processes preferred. Strong organizational and documentation skills. Ability to manage multiple deadlines and regulatory requirements simultaneously. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work cross-functionally with drivers, operations, maintenance, recruiting, insurance providers, attorneys, and executive leadership. Experience with transportation management or safety systems; McLeod experience is a plus . What We Are Looking For We are looking for someone who does more than maintain compliance records. The successful candidate will take ownership of the company's safety and compliance function , actively identify risks, follow through on corrective actions, and hold the department accountable for meeting regulatory and company requirements. The right candidate should be comfortable asking questions, auditing existing processes, identifying gaps, and recommending improvements. This is a leadership position for someone who understands that strong safety performance requires organization, accountability, follow-through, and proactive risk management .
