Fiedler Construction and Roofing Inc., FCR Build Group Inc., Apex Metalworks Inc., and North Pointe Property Management. Together we cover construction, roofing, custom metal fabrication, and property management, with office staff, field crews, and shop employees. As we grow, we need one person to own HR and compliance across every company in the group. About the Role As our HR & Compliance Specialist, you will be the person who makes sure all our companies follow California and federal employment laws, and that our employees are well taken care of. This role is built for an independent problem-solver. You'll know California employment law well enough to spot issues, and you'll have the initiative to research what you don't know, stay ahead of new laws, and bring clear recommendations to ownership. No one will hand you a checklist; we want you to build it. You don't need 20+ years of experience. You need a solid HR foundation, sound judgment, and follow- through. What You'll Do Compliance (the heart of the role) Own employment-law compliance for four companies, each with its own workforce and needs Track new and changing California, local (San Jose/Santa Clara County), and federal laws, and put the changes in place before they take effect Research compliance questions on your own and present clear, practical recommendations to ownership Build and maintain a compliance calendar: filings, renewals, postings, training deadlines, and required reports Conduct periodic self-audits of I-9s, personnel files, wage and hour practices, and pay records, and fix any gaps Keep required workplace postings and employee notices current at every location Ensure harassment prevention training is completed on time for supervisors and employees Partner with field and shop leadership on Cal/OSHA requirements, including the Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) and Workplace Violence Prevention Plan Wage & Hour Review practices for overtime, meal and rest breaks, sick leave, final pay, and wage statements Partner with accounting and payroll on new hires, pay changes, deductions, and time records Help ensure employees are correctly classified (exempt vs. non-exempt; employee vs. contractor) Policies & Handbooks Maintain and update employee handbooks and policies for each entity Draft clear, compliant policies as laws change or new needs come up Employee Lifecycl e Manage recruiting, job postings (including pay transparency requirements), offer letters, and onboarding Maintain complete, confidential personnel and medical files Handle separations, including final pay timing and required notices Benefits, Leave & Workers' Comp Coordinate benefits enrollment and open enrollment for office and field staff Administer protected leaves (CFRA, FMLA, pregnancy disability leave, paid sick leave, and others) Manage workers' compensation claims and return-to-work with our carrier E mployee Relations Be a trusted, approachable resource for employees at every company Investigate and document workplace concerns fairly and consistently What We're Looking For Required 3-5+ years of HR experience, with hands-on compliance responsibility Strong working knowledge of California employment law: wage and hour, leave, hiring, discipline, and termination A track record of working independently: you manage your own priorities and research answers without being told Excellent organization - you never miss a deadline Clear, professional writing for policies, notices, and recommendations Discretion with confidential information Comfortable communicating with office staff, field crews, and ownership alike Proficient with Microsoft Office / Google Workspace and HR or payroll systems Nice to Have Experience in construction, roofing, manufacturing, or property management Experience supporting multiple companies or locations Familiarity with Cal/OSHA and workers' compensation Bilingual English/Spanish PHR, SHRM-CP, or a California HR certification (or working toward one) Why Join U s Own HR and compliance for a growing group of companies — real responsibility, real impact Work directly with the owners Room to grow as the companies grow Medical, dental, and vision benefits, 401(k), FTO A family-owned environment where initiative is noticed and valued How to Apply Send your resume to along with a short note (a few sentences are fine) describing a time you found a compliance issue or researched a new law on your own, and what you did about it.
