As Soon as Possible Position Summary The City of La Vernia is seeking a motivated, organized, and customer-service-oriented individual to join our team as a full-time Code Compliance & Permit Coordinator. This position serves a dual role supporting the City's code compliance and development services functions. The successful candidate will divide their responsibilities between administering and enforcing the City's Code of Ordinances and assisting with the intake, coordination, and tracking of residential and commercial permits in collaboration with the City Engineer. The ideal candidate is comfortable working both in an office environment and in the field, communicating directly with residents, contractors, property owners, and developers, and managing multiple cases and projects at various stages of completion. Work Environment This is a full-time position based at La Vernia City Hall with regular field work throughout the City. The position requires frequent interaction with the public, including residents, property owners, contractors, and members of the development community. The successful candidate must be able to work independently in the field while also functioning as part of a collaborative City Hall team.

Qualifications:
Key Responsibilities Code Compliance Perform field and office work related to enforcement of the City s Code of Ordinances, including zoning, property maintenance, nuisance conditions, health and safety, building-related violations, and other applicable regulations.
Conduct routine patrols and property inspections to identify potential code violations.
Investigate complaints received from residents, City departments, and other agencies.
Communicate with property owners and responsible parties regarding violations and required corrective actions.
Prepare and issue notices of violation, warnings, correspondence, and other enforcement documentation.
Work with property owners to achieve voluntary compliance whenever possible.
Maintain accurate case files, photographs, inspection records, correspondence, and other documentation.
Prepare cases for further enforcement action when necessary.
Appear in Municipal Court and provide testimony and supporting documentation when required.
Research City ordinances and assist with the review, drafting, and updating of municipal codes as assigned.
Coordinate with other City departments and outside agencies when violations involve multiple areas of responsibility. Permitting & Development Services Serve as a primary point of contact for permit intake and general permitting questions.
Receive and process applications for residential and commercial building permits and ancillary permits, including fences, accessory structures, signs, and similar improvements.
Review applications for completeness and coordinate technical review with the City Engineer and other applicable staff.
Communicate with residents, contractors, developers, and design professionals regarding application requirements, permit status, missing documentation, and City processes.
Maintain accurate permit records, files, tracking systems, and related documentation.
Assist with basic research involving zoning, land use, development regulations, property information, and City requirements.
Coordinate permit issuance and administrative follow-up after required reviews and approvals have been completed.
Provide professional customer service in person, by telephone, and through email.
Assist the City Engineer and City Administration with planning, development, permitting, and code-related projects as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to communicate professionally with residents, contractors, developers, property owners, and City staff, including during difficult or sensitive interactions.
Ability to interpret, research, and apply municipal ordinances, policies, and procedures.
Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records.
Ability to manage multiple assignments, cases, and deadlines simultaneously.
Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Ability to perform both office and field-based responsibilities.
Valid Texas driver's license or ability to obtain one within a reasonable period following employment. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in municipal government, code compliance/enforcement, permitting, planning, development services, inspections, construction, or a related field.
Experience working directly with the public in a customer-service or regulatory environment.
Familiarity with municipal zoning, land-use regulations, building permitting, or development processes.
Experience researching and interpreting municipal codes or regulations.
Experience maintaining regulatory, inspection, permitting, or case-management records.
Coursework, training, certification, or education in public administration, urban planning, construction, code enforcement, or a related field is a plus.
