The SBA Support Manager is a dual-focus role that bridges business development and loan processing within the SBA department. This position is responsible for acquiring and growing SBA client relationships while simultaneously managing the full loan processing lifecycle from application through closing. The SBA Support Manager originates new SBA loan opportunities via lending partners, guides borrowers through the eligibility and documentation process, ensures SBA and Credit Union compliance at every stage, and drives timely, accurate closings. Success in this role requires equal command of relationship management and technical SBA expertise, including thorough knowledge of all applicable SBA SOPs, strong credit acumen, and the ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams, borrowers, vendors, and third-party professionals. The SBA Support Manager partners closely with SBA underwriters and SBA Loan Specialists to keep loans on track and ensure exceptional service is delivered to every client. This is a hybrid position based in either Troy, Michigan, or Loveland, Ohio.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Business Development & Client Acquisition Originate sound SBA loans that comply with current SBA SOP requirements and lending partner policies. Meet with lending partners leadership at least monthly to review pipeline, performance and obtain feedback on service levels. Actively prospect, develop, and retain SBA client relationships through focused relationship planning and lending partner engagement. Interview loan customers, gather required application information, and analyze applicant financial status, credit, and property evaluations to determine feasibility of granting a loan. Assist in identifying opportunities to cross sell Credit Union products, including deposit products and treasury management services, to build profitable, full-service client relationships. Collaborate with credit analysts to prepare loan approval memorandums; resolve underwriting and application questions with applicants. Present credit recommendations to senior management and credit underwriters, demonstrating a thorough understanding of each credit presented. Maintain accountability for the profitability of all SBA relationships within the assigned portfolio. Loan Processing, Structuring & Documentation Discuss up-front eligibility and document collection requirements with borrowers; advise on deal structuring as needed. Prepare and maintain Deal Checklists immediately upon receipt of an qualified opportunity; provide in a format ready to share with members and keep outstanding documentation lists current. Review documentation provided by borrowers, CPAs, and other parties for SBA and Credit Union compliance; provide specific feedback to attorneys, title companies, and other stakeholders regarding eligibility. Work with SBA loan specialists to order and manage third-party reports in accordance with Credit Union and SBA requirements; troubleshoot vendor issues as needed. Work with SBA loan specialist to submit loans to SBA via e-Tran, respond to screen-out letters, and verify that SBA Terms and Conditions match internal approval. Verify and document equity injection in accordance with SBA SOP requirements. Verify borrower eligibility, loan approval, and that all required documentation is complete, accurate, and compliant prior to closing. Coordinate with title companies, vendors, and internal departments to schedule closings and meet all required deadlines under the guidance from the SBA loan specialist. Review closing statements and loan packages to ensure all fees are collected and properly documented. Manage and audit loan files for compliance with Loan Policy and internal procedures; identify and clear exceptions. Portfolio Management & Compliance Ensure loans are structured, processed, and closed in full adherence to all SBA SOP requirements and Credit Union policies. Maintain diligent loan files with complete documentation to support satisfactory internal and external audits. Stay current on all SBA SOP updates and regulatory changes affecting SBA-related products. Maintain up-to-date Monday.com boards with weekly updates detailing appropriate 'Who, What, When' to keep projected closing dates on track. Adhere to loan policies and procedures; participate in ongoing training and professional development as directed by management. Customer Service & Team Collaboration Provide exceptional service to internal and external customers, including participation in calls, meetings, and client correspondence. Serve as an SBA Subject Matter Expert, communicating complex eligibility, compliance, and process information to borrowers and lenders clearly and professionally. Support the company's mission, values, and customer service standards in all aspects of work. Coordinate with SBA Loan Specialists to ensure loan pipelines move efficiently from application through closing. Effectively present information in one-on-one and group settings, including to clients, Loan Committee members, and internal teams. Perform other duties or projects as assigned by management based on operational needs.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
3+ years of SBA lending experience, with demonstrated proficiency in both business development and loan processing. Strong working knowledge of
SBA SOP 50
10 and related SBA procedures. Highly developed accounting, finance, credit, and sales skills with a proven track record of prospecting and closing SBA loans. Ability to analyze applicant financial statements, credit reports, and collateral evaluations to support sound lending decisions. Strong understanding of lending policies, regulations, and deal structures, including the ability to interpret legal documents. Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail, accuracy, and follow-through. Exceptional time management, verbal and written communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to cross-sell multiple financial products and build long-term client relationships. Demonstrates confidence, assertiveness, professionalism, and a high level of dedication and teamwork. Ability to adapt to fast-paced and changing work environments while managing multiple priorities effectively. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel); working knowledge of Fiserv, and other commercial banking programs. Comfortable learning and using new systems to support closings and client communications. Ability to travel as needed to meet clients or conduct site visits. Able to work effectively with diverse personalities and maintain professionalism under pressure.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required:
Bachelor's Degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience in a similar role. Minimum 3 years of SBA lending experience encompassing business development, loan origination, and loan processing/closing. Experience working in a metro market with established community and professional networks.
Preferred:
Experience using Monday.com or similar project management platforms for loan pipeline tracking. Familiarity with e-Tran SBA submission platform. Prior experience in a combined BDO and loan operations role within a credit union or community bank environment.
