Job Overview We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Ocean Cargo Supervisor to lead international ocean import and export operations while overseeing and supporting a team of logistics professionals. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining efficient daily operations, ensuring shipment accuracy and regulatory compliance, resolving escalations, and supporting strong customer service. The ideal candidate brings extensive ocean freight forwarding experience along with proven team leadership capabilities. This position requires someone who can independently manage daily operations, coach and develop employees, improve processes, and ensure consistent service across ocean import and export activities. Responsibilities Supervise daily ocean import and export operations, ensuring shipments are handled accurately, efficiently, and within customer requirements. Lead, train, coach, and support Team Leaders and operations staff to maintain strong performance and service standards. Oversee ocean shipment activity including bookings, documentation, cargo movement, customs clearance coordination, and final delivery. Ensure compliance with U.S. Customs, FMC, DOT, TSA, international trade regulations, and applicable transportation requirements. Coordinate with steamship lines, ocean carriers, NVOCCs, customs brokers, truckers, warehouses, overseas agents, vendors, customers, and internal departments. Manage customer escalations, shipment delays, claims, documentation issues, service failures, and other operational exceptions. Monitor employee workloads, staffing requirements, productivity, service levels, and departmental KPIs. Develop and improve SOPs, workflows, and operational procedures to increase efficiency, accuracy, and profitability. Conduct employee coaching, training, performance evaluations, and professional development planning. Support new customer implementations, account retention, and ongoing business growth initiatives. Assist management with operational reporting, forecasting, budgeting, staffing, and departmental planning. Maintain a professional and accountable team environment focused on customer satisfaction and continuous improvement. Skills Minimum of 5 years of ocean freight forwarding experience , including both ocean import and export operations. Minimum of 2 years of supervisory, team leadership, or equivalent leadership experience within freight forwarding or international logistics. Current or recent experience at the Team Lead, Supervisor, Senior Supervisor, or comparable leadership level. Strong understanding of the complete ocean import and export shipment lifecycle. Proven ability to supervise, train, coach, and develop logistics operations employees. Strong knowledge of ocean freight documentation, customs clearance procedures, Incoterms, trade compliance, and international shipping requirements. Experience coordinating with steamship lines, NVOCCs, customs brokers, trucking companies, warehouses, and overseas agents. Ability to independently resolve complex shipment issues, operational challenges, and customer escalations. Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities. Excellent customer service, communication, and relationship-management skills. Ability to manage competing priorities and maintain operational performance in a fast-paced freight forwarding environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook; experience with freight forwarding or transportation management systems is preferred. High school diploma or equivalent required; additional education in logistics, transportation, international trade, or supply chain management is a plus.
