Job Description

Position Overview We are a growing CPA firm seeking an experienced Controller to oversee the firm's internal accounting and financial operations while also supporting and reviewing the work of our Client Accounting Services team . This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who enjoys maintaining strong financial controls, developing staff, improving accounting processes, and providing both firm leadership and clients with accurate, timely financial information. The Controller will be responsible for the firm's accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, cash-flow management, billing and collections oversight, payroll coordination, and financial analysis. In addition, this individual will work closely with our accounting staff to review client bookkeeping, financial statements, reconciliations, payroll tax compliance, sales tax filings, and month-end accounting work for accuracy and completeness . The ideal candidate is highly organized, comfortable working independently, enjoys mentoring accounting professionals, and can identify opportunities to improve both internal and client accounting processes. Key ResponsibilitiesFirm Accounting & Financial Management Manage the firm's day-to-day accounting and financial operations. Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Manage the monthly financial close process. Maintain the general ledger and oversee account reconciliations. Monitor cash flow and prepare short- and long-term cash-flow projections. Develop and maintain annual budgets and financial forecasts. Provide management with financial analysis, KPIs, and profitability reporting. Analyze revenue, realization, utilization, labor costs, and profitability by service line, office, partner, or other relevant categories. Oversee client billing processes, including WIP, accounts receivable, collections, and aging. Monitor accounts payable and vendor relationships. Coordinate payroll and employee-related financial reporting. Maintain appropriate internal controls and accounting procedures. Assist with partner compensation and other management reporting as needed. Coordinate with banking, insurance, retirement plan, and other financial service providers. Assist leadership in evaluating compensation, staffing, pricing, capital expenditures, and other financial decisions. Client Accounting Services Oversight Work closely with Client Accounting Services staff in the preparation and review of client accounting work. Review monthly and quarterly client financial statements for accuracy, completeness, and proper presentation. Review bank, credit card, loan, payroll, and balance-sheet reconciliations. Review general ledger activity and identify unusual, incorrect, or incomplete transactions. Review adjusting journal entries and month-end closing procedures. Review payroll reports and payroll tax filings for accuracy and completeness. Assist staff with payroll tax matters, including federal and state payroll tax deposits, quarterly filings, and year-end reporting. Review sales tax calculations and returns and help ensure clients remain compliant with applicable filing and payment requirements. Assist staff with resolving payroll tax and sales tax notices, discrepancies, and account issues. Help ensure client books are accurate and properly prepared for tax planning and tax return preparation. Assist staff with complex accounting issues and provide technical guidance when needed. Develop consistent accounting and review procedures across client engagements. Monitor the quality and timeliness of client accounting work. Train, mentor, and develop accounting staff. Assist with workload management and assignment of client accounting responsibilities. Communicate with clients when higher-level accounting, payroll tax, sales tax, or financial issues require additional attention. Identify opportunities to improve client reporting and provide clients with more meaningful financial information. Work with firm leadership to expand and improve the firm's Client Accounting Services offering. Process & Technology Improvement Identify opportunities to automate and improve accounting and administrative processes. Assist with implementation and optimization of accounting, practice-management, payroll, reporting, and technology systems. Develop standardized workflows, checklists, and quality-control procedures. Help the firm leverage technology to improve efficiency within both internal and client accounting operations. Maintain confidentiality regarding firm, employee, partner, and client financial information. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably including Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, Client Accounting Manager, or similar responsibilities. Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting. Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, month-end close, budgeting, forecasting, and cash-flow management. Strong working knowledge of payroll taxes, payroll tax filings, and related compliance requirements. Working knowledge of sales tax reporting, filing requirements, and compliance. Experience reviewing payroll reports, payroll tax returns, and sales tax filings. Experience reviewing the accounting work of other team members. Ability to identify accounting errors and communicate corrections in a constructive manner. Strong Excel and financial-analysis skills. Strong QuickBooks experience; QuickBooks Online experience is highly desirable. Experience with payroll platforms and accounting technology is preferred. Experience with professional-service firms, CPA firms, outsourced accounting, CAS, law firms, consulting firms, or other time-and-billing organizations is highly desirable. Experience supervising or mentoring accounting staff is preferred. CPA designation is preferred but not required. The Ideal Candidate We are looking for someone who is: Hands-on.
