Job description: Reporting directly to the CFO, the Director of Accounting & Controls owns the general ledger, the monthly and annual close, internal controls, and day-to-day accounting operations across all branches and business lines. This role combines hands-on technical accounting leadership with team management, and partners closely with operations to protect margins and support the company's growth. Financial Reporting & Close Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, ensuring an accurate and timely GL and financial statements in accordance with GAAP. Prepare and present consolidated financial statements across all branches, entities, and business lines. Review reconciliations of all balance sheet accounts and resolve discrepancies promptly. Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure consistent, accurate coding across locations. Oversee project and contract accounting, including revenue recognition (percentage-of-completion or completed-contract as applicable). Manage rental revenue accounting, fleet and fixed-asset records, depreciation, and utilization reporting. Partner with operations to analyze margin variances and support profitability reporting across business lines. Accounting Operations Supervise accounts payable, accounts receivable/billing, and general ledger functions. Ensure timely and accurate customer billing (including progress billings and retainage) and drive collections in coordination with the AR team. Oversee vendor payments, subcontractor accounting, and lien waiver/compliance processes. Manage cash application, bank reconciliations, and daily cash reporting to the CFO. Internal Controls & Compliance Design, implement, and maintain internal controls that safeguard company assets and ensure reliable financial reporting. Manage multi-state sales and use tax, business licensing, and other regulatory filings. Coordinate the annual audit/review and serve as the primary liaison for external auditors, providing schedules and support. Partner with external tax advisors on income tax, property tax, and related filings. Planning, Analysis & Systems Support the CFO in budgeting, forecasting, and cash-flow management, including branch-level analysis. Develop and maintain management reporting, KPIs, and dashboards for leadership and branch managers. Own the accounting/ERP system, drive process automation, and lead system improvements or implementations. Support banking, surety/bonding, insurance, and lender reporting requirements. Leadership Manage, mentor, and develop the accounting team; set goals, review performance, and build bench strength. Establish and document accounting policies, procedures, and month-end checklists. Serve as a trusted business partner to operations, branch leadership, and the executive team.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting. 12+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 5+ years in a supervisory or management role. Strong working knowledge of U.S. GAAP and internal control frameworks. Proven experience with month-end close, financial statement preparation, and general ledger ownership. Advanced Excel skills and experience with an ERP/accounting system. Preferred CPA (active) strongly preferred. Experience in construction or a project-based services industry. Familiarity with percentage-of-completion revenue recognition and retainage billing. Experience with multi-state tax and surety bonding. Experience with construction ERP systems (e.g., Viewpoint Vista, Sage 300 CRE, Foundation, or similar). Multi-branch or multi-entity accounting experience. Why is This a
