Job Description
Description We are looking for an experienced and results-driven Director of Accounting - Public Sector to join our team. This long-term contract position focuses on stabilizing financial operations, addressing audit findings, and aligning accounting processes to Workday Financials. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in public sector accounting and demonstrate strong leadership in transforming challenged environments. Workday Financials experience is required.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee and stabilize accounting operations to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance.
- Lead the remediation of audit findings, providing hands-on support to auditors and implementing corrective actions.
- Support the overall Accounting function with Workday re-implementation & remediation efforts.
- Develop and execute sustainable processes for monthly close activities, reconciliations, and journal entries.
- Manage high-risk areas such as fixed assets/capital projects, grants accounting, and control processes to mitigate financial risks.
- Produce and validate fund-level municipal financial reports, including audit-ready statements.
- Collaborate with the Workday re-implementation team to define and test accounting requirements within the system.
- Transition accounting workflows from Excel-based processes to Workday Financials, ensuring system alignment.
- Design and implement internal controls, workflows, and approval structures tailored to public sector requirements.
- Establish comprehensive policies and procedures to support audit readiness and financial integrity.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to accounting staff, fostering a culture of accountability and excellence. Requirements
- Extensive experience in public sector, government, or nonprofit accounting at the Controller or Assistant Controller level.
- Proven track record in audit remediation, including hands-on involvement in addressing findings.
- Expertise in Workday Financials, with strong skills in reporting and system implementation.
- Ability to navigate and stabilize operations in disrupted or challenged environments.
- Strong leadership skills with a hands-on approach to execution and problem-solving.
- Solid understanding of grant accounting, fixed assets, and fund accounting.
- Experience in producing audit-ready financial statements and managing financial reporting integrity.
- Familiarity with establishing internal controls aligned to public sector requirements.
