Overview The Commercial Banking Analyst/Underwriter supports the commercial lending team by analyzing financial information, assessing credit risk, preparing loan underwriting packages, and assisting with portfolio management activities. This position plays a key role in evaluating commercial loan requests, monitoring existing relationships, and supporting compliance with bank credit policies and applicable regulatory requirements. The analyst works closely with Commercial Relationship Managers, Credit Administration, and Loan Operations to support safe and profitable lending decisions. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Credit Analysis and Underwriting
- Analyze business and personal financial statements, tax returns, interim financial reports, and cash flow information.
- Assist in evaluating commercial loan requests for working capital, equipment, owner-occupied real estate, investment real estate, and other business lending needs.
- Prepare written credit memorandums and underwriting analyses for review by senior credit officers.
- Calculate and analyze key credit metrics, including Debt Service Coverage Ratio (DSCR), Loan-to-Value (LTV), debt-to-worth, global cash flow, liquidity, and leverage ratios.
- Identify strengths, weaknesses, risks, and mitigating factors associated with credit requests.
- Assist in determining appropriate loan structures, collateral requirements, and covenant recommendations. Portfolio Management
- Support ongoing monitoring of commercial loan relationships.
- Review annual financial statement updates and covenant compliance.
- Assist with risk rating reviews and portfolio quality assessments.
- Track financial reporting requirements and document exceptions.
- Help identify emerging credit concerns and escalate issues appropriately. Loan Documentation and Administration
- Help ensure loan packages are complete and meet bank policy requirements.
- Assist in coordinating appraisals, environmental reports, title work, insurance reviews, and other due diligence items.
- Work with Loan Operations and documentation staff to facilitate loan closings.
- Maintain accurate credit files and electronic records. Relationship Support
- Participate in client meetings as appropriate.
- Respond to requests for financial information and loan status updates.
- Build an understanding of customers' industries, operations, and financing needs. Compliance and Risk Management
- Adhere to bank credit policies, underwriting standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Maintain familiarity with commercial lending regulations and industry practices.
- May assist in preparation for internal audits, loan reviews, and regulatory examinations. Qualifications Education
- High School Diploma required. Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field preferred. Experience Desired
- Experience in commercial banking, credit analysis, lending, accounting, or financial services a plus.
- Relevant internships in banking or finance are preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to interpret financial statements and tax returns.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required, especially in Excel and Word. Experience with financial spreading software preferred.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Strong customer service orientation and professional demeanor.
- Ability to travel for customer visits, property inspections, or training. Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with commercial credit underwriting software.
- Familiarity with SBA lending or commercial real estate lending.
- Knowledge of banking regulations and loan documentation processes. Benefits
