Job Description
Job Overview The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in governmental and public accounting, with proficiency in various accounting software and financial analysis. As a key member of our team, you will ensure accurate financial reporting, effective cash management, and adherence to GAAP and other regulatory standards to support the organization's mission-driven objectives. Position Summary We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Accounting Manager to join our nonprofit team and serve as the primary, hands-on accounting professional to oversee the financial operations of our organization. This role requires a strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, grant management, regulatory compliance, financial reporting and overall financial operations. The ideal candidate will be proactive, organized, and detail-oriented fast-learner that is motivated to grow quickly into a Senior Financial Leadership role. This role will work closely with organizational leadership and receive guidance from current Interim CFO. It provides a clear pathway to quickly advance into a Controller, Director of Finance, or Chief Financial Officer role, supported through mentorship and professional development. Key Responsibilities Accounting Operations Manage daily accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll entries, journal entries, and general ledger maintenance. Perform month-end close, bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, accruals, and depreciation schedules. Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and internal controls. Administer payroll and payroll tax functions. Maintain proper documentation and support organizational financial policies and procedures. Work closely with leadership and program managers to provide financial guidance and operational insight. Grant Accounting & Compliance Track, manage, and report on all federal, state, and private grant budgets and expenditures. Prepare grant budgets, drawdowns, financial reports, invoices, and funder-specific documentation. Ensure compliance with federal Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200), state regulations, and grantor requirements. Monitor grant spend vs. budget and ensure accurate allocation of direct and indirect costs. Serve as a financial liaison with funders and grant partners as needed. Financial Reporting Prepare monthly internal financial reports for leadership. Support quarterly and annual reporting packages for the Board of Directors. Analyze variances and provide explanations to leadership and program teams. Budgeting & Forecasting Assist the Fractional CFO with annual budget development. Provide ongoing forecasting and spending analyses for grants and organizational programs. Support program managers in understanding and managing their budgets. Audit & External Reporting Prepare year-end audit schedules and documentation. Support financial audits Assist in Form 990 preparation and compliance filings. Cash Management Monitor cash flow, prepare cash reconciliations, and identify financial risks. Process vendor payments, credit card activity, and expense reimbursements. Oversee purchasing controls and ensure timely payment processes. Systems & Process Improvement Maintain the accounting system and recommend workflow improvements. Identify opportunities for automation suitable for a one-person department. Strengthen and refine internal controls and financial procedures. Leadership & Growth Serve as the organization's primary accounting resource and internal advisor. Partner with leadership on strategy, operations, and financial decision-making. Opportunity to grow into a Controller, Director of Finance, or CFO role as the organization expands. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or master's preferred but not required). 4-7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including nonprofit finance experience Strong knowledge of nonprofit fund accounting, grant compliance, and financial reporting. Experience with federal/state grant management, including drawdowns. Proficient in accounting software; QuickBooks preferred Advanced Excel skills and exceptional attention to detail. Experience with payroll processing and benefits administration. Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently, manage multiple deadlines, and collaborate across teams. Pay:
