Retail / Discount Retail / Multi-Location Operations We are seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to oversee the day-to-day accounting operations for a fast-paced, multi-location retail business. This position will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, strengthening accounting controls, managing reconciliations, and ensuring store-level activity is properly reflected in the company's financial statements. The ideal candidate is highly organized, comfortable working with large volumes of transactions, and understands the unique accounting challenges of retail businesses—including inventory, point-of-sale activity, cash and credit-card reconciliation, sales tax, accounts payable, and multiple store locations. Key Responsibilities Manage the company's daily and monthly accounting operations across multiple retail locations. Oversee the monthly financial close process and ensure financial statements are completed accurately and on time. Review general ledger activity and investigate unusual transactions, discrepancies, or accounting adjustments. Manage and review bank, credit-card, merchant processor, and POS reconciliations. Reconcile store sales from the POS system to bank deposits and accounting records. Oversee accounts payable and ensure vendor invoices, payments, credits, and statements are properly recorded. Monitor accounts receivable and other outstanding balances. Work closely with purchasing, warehouse, inventory, and store management teams. Review inventory accounting, inventory adjustments, shrink, transfers, write-offs, and cost-of-goods-sold activity. Assist with physical inventory counts and investigate significant inventory variances. Maintain accurate fixed-asset and depreciation schedules. Review payroll entries and payroll-related liabilities. Oversee sales-tax reporting and assist with state and local tax compliance. Maintain balance-sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules. Review journal entries and supporting documentation before posting. Identify duplicate, incorrect, unusual, or unsupported accounting transactions. Establish and improve internal controls for stores, warehouses, inventory, cash, and purchasing. Assist with budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow reporting, and management reporting. Prepare financial information and schedules for ownership, outside accountants, lenders, auditors, and tax professionals. Supervise, train, and develop accounting staff as the department grows. Help improve accounting processes and integrate accounting, POS, inventory, and operational systems. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred. 5+ years of progressive accounting experience preferred. Previous experience as an Accounting Manager, Senior Accountant, Assistant Controller, or similar role. Retail, distribution, inventory, or multi-location accounting experience strongly preferred. Strong understanding of GAAP and general ledger accounting. Strong understanding of inventory accounting and cost of goods sold. Experience with high-volume accounts payable and transaction processing. Experience reconciling POS, merchant processing, cash, and credit-card activity. Advanced Excel skills, including PivotTables, lookups, formulas, and large-data analysis. Experience with accounting/ERP systems and ability to learn new software quickly. Strong analytical skills and exceptional attention to detail. Ability to investigate discrepancies rather than simply process transactions. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines. Comfortable working in a growing company where systems and processes are continually being improved. What We're Looking For We are looking for someone who takes ownership of the numbers. The right candidate should be able to look at a general ledger, inventory adjustment, store reconciliation, vendor balance, or unusual journal entry and immediately start asking: Does this make sense? What created this number? Where is the supporting documentation? This is not simply a bookkeeping position.
