Job Description
Job Summary The International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers ("SMART") is a non-profit, unincorporated labor organization and the largest railroad operating union in North America. Widely recognized as the leader among transportation labor unions, the Transportation Division of SMART ("SMART-TD"), formerly United Transportation Union, sets the pace in national and state legislative activity, collective bargaining, and efforts to improve safety and working conditions in the rail, bus, transit, and airline industries.

is also a Railroad Retirement employer (RRB), administering and supporting benefit structures governed under the Railroad Retirement Acts.Position Summary:
SMART-TD
seeks an experienced and detail-oriented Accounting Manager to oversee financial operations and ensure accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in all accounting functions, including oversight of employee benefit and ERISA-related plans. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical accounting expertise, leadership ability, and a proactive approach to process improvement in a fast-paced environment.Responsibilities:
Manage and oversee daily accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, political action committees, and reconciliations. Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes. Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements in accordance with GAAP. Ensure compliance with Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) reporting and employer obligations. Develop, maintain, and strengthen internal controls, policies, and procedures. Coordinate and support external audits and regulatory reporting requirements. Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff, including cross-training initiatives. Monitor budgets, expenses, and financial performance, providing insights to leadership. Utilize accounting systems, Excel, and internal tools for reporting and analysis. Collaborate with internal departments to ensure financial accuracy and operational efficiency. Prepare, coordinate, and/or oversee the timely filing of annual government and regulatory reports, including LM-2, LM-3, and LM-4 filings and Form 5500, ensuring compliance with Department of Labor and IRS regulations. Assist with other duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory responsibilities. Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting. Excellent analytical skills with experience in financial analysis and reporting. Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills. Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines. Strong computer proficiency, including advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience with accounting systems. Excellent communication and leadership abilities.Preferred Qualifications:
CPA or CMA certification. Experience in nonprofit or labor organization accounting. Experience with ERISA plan accounting, including Form 5500 reporting and regulatory compliance. Experience with audits and regulatory compliance.Compensation & Benefits:
Base Salary:
$130,000 - $140,000Retirement Benefits:
