Position Summary The Controller will oversee the firm's day-to-day accounting activities, financial reporting, cash-flow management and legal billing operations. This individual will manage a small accounting and billing support team and serve as the primary liaison with the firm's outsourced legal billing provider. The successful candidate will strengthen financial processes, improve visibility into revenue and profitability, and ensure that the firm's equity partners receive reliable information to support business decisions. This is a hands-on role requiring someone who is comfortable working directly with transactions, reconciliations, billing activity, team members and firm leadership. Key Responsibilities Oversee the firm's daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, disbursements and general ledger activity. Lead the monthly close process and ensure financial activity is recorded accurately and on time. Prepare monthly financial statements, management reports and supporting schedules for the firm's equity partners. Provide clear financial visibility into revenue, operating expenses, compensation costs, cash flow and profitability. Prepare, review and post journal entries, accruals and other general ledger adjustments. Oversee bank and credit-card reconciliations and resolve discrepancies promptly. Monitor cash balances and short-term cash requirements across operating, payroll, IOLTA and other firm accounts. Review accounts receivable aging and work with attorneys, billing personnel and leadership to address balances outstanding beyond 60 and 90 days. Support the development and maintenance of a rolling 13-week cash-flow forecast. Manage and mentor the firm's accounting and billing support team, establishing clear responsibilities, priorities and performance expectations. Oversee the internal preparation, review and revision of client invoices. Serve as the primary liaison with the firm's outsourced legal billing provider and ensure an accurate, timely handoff of approved invoices. Coordinate with the outside CPA firm, which is responsible for firm and partner tax matters. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience. Progressive accounting experience encompassing general ledger accounting, AP, AR, reconciliations, cash management, monthly close and financial reporting.
