Position Overview A privately held, multi-state service organization is seeking an experienced Manager of Finance & Controller to lead its day-to-day accounting and financial management functions from its corporate office in Smithtown, Long Island. This is a hands-on financial leadership position that combines traditional controllership responsibilities with financial planning and analysis, cash-flow management, budgeting, forecasting, cost analysis, profitability analysis, and executive decision support. The Manager of Finance & Controller will oversee the finance and accounting team while maintaining direct responsibility for the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of financial reporting. The successful candidate will be expected to go beyond historical accounting and provide management with meaningful, forward-looking financial analysis and recommendations. This position reports directly to executive leadership and is 100% in person . Remote and hybrid work arrangements are not available for this role. Key Responsibilities Lead the monthly financial close and ensure timely and accurate financial statements, general ledger activity, reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules. Supervise Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and payroll functions while maintaining appropriate preparation, review, approval, and internal-control segregation. Manage cash flow, liquidity, banking activity, and working-capital requirements, including maintaining a 13-week rolling cash-flow forecast. Develop and manage the annual operating budget and rolling financial forecasts. Prepare monthly budget-to-actual and variance analyses identifying root causes, financial impact, and recommended corrective actions. Develop and maintain driver-based financial forecasts using operating metrics such as billable hours, billing rates, wages, overtime, new and lost contracts, insurance, workers' compensation, benefits, vehicles, and corporate overhead. Develop and maintain fully burdened labor-cost models incorporating wages, payroll taxes, workers' compensation, benefits/PTO, recruiting and training costs, supervision, equipment, vehicles, technology, and allocated corporate overhead. Support bid and proposal pricing by determining the true economic cost of service and evaluating minimum, target, and desired margins. Develop customer, contract, location, and entity-level profitability reporting. Establish and maintain a documented corporate overhead allocation methodology. Perform scenario and sensitivity analyses involving wage increases, overtime, contract gains or losses, changes in billable hours, insurance costs, benefit costs, and margin compression. Identify and quantify opportunities for cost reduction, improved cash flow, stronger margins, and increased operating profitability. Monitor accounts receivable aging, collections exposure, accounts payable requirements, payroll variances, and other material financial exceptions. Coordinate with outside CPA/tax firms and professional advisors regarding federal, state, and local tax matters, audits, financial reporting, and compliance. Support insurance and workers' compensation audits and financial reconciliations. Improve accounting procedures, internal controls, documentation, reporting, and financial systems. Prepare financial models, business cases, and analyses for executive management. Translate complex financial matters into clear business recommendations and actionable information for senior leadership. Finance Team Leadership Provide direct leadership and oversight of accounting and finance personnel, including AR/AP and payroll functions. Establish departmental priorities and recurring financial deadlines. Review staff work and resolve accounting or financial exceptions. Develop team members and strengthen accountability within the finance function. Identify opportunities to streamline and improve financial processes. Maintain appropriate internal controls and segregation of duties. Supervise and review transactional accounting activities rather than unnecessarily duplicating work assigned to accounting personnel. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field. Approximately 7+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience , including meaningful responsibility for financial reporting and controllership functions. Previous experience supervising accounting or finance personnel. Strong understanding of GAAP and general ledger accounting. Demonstrated experience with month-end close, financial statements, reconciliations, accruals, AP/AR, cash management, and internal controls. Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial variance analysis. Advanced Excel and financial-modeling skills. Strong ability to analyze costs, margins, overhead, and profitability. Ability to independently investigate financial issues, identify root causes, and develop recommendations for senior management. Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage recurring deadlines. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability and willingness to work full-time and in person at the Smithtown, Long Island office. Preferred Qualifications Multi-entity and/or multi-state accounting experience. Experience within a labor-intensive service business. Experience with job costing or contract costing. Payroll and labor-burden analysis experience. Workers' compensation and insurance accounting experience. Contract pricing and profitability analysis experience. Experience with Sage, QuickBooks, WinTeam, or comparable accounting/ERP systems. Experience supporting a privately held organization with geographically dispersed operations. Key Deliverables The individual selected for this position will be expected to develop, maintain, and/or oversee financial reporting and management tools including: Timely monthly financial statements and executive financial reporting. Monthly budget-to-actual analysis with identified root causes and corrective recommendations. 13-week rolling cash-flow forecast. Rolling 12-24 month operating forecast with documented assumptions. Annual operating budget and related headcount/capital assumptions. Fully burdened labor-cost models. Corporate overhead model with documented allocation methodology. Bid and pricing models evaluating minimum, target, and desired margins. Customer, location, contract, and entity-level profitability reporting. Periodic cost-reduction and profitability-improvement recommendations. Scenario and sensitivity analyses to support management decision-making.
Compensation Base Salary:
$85,000-$95,000 per year. Final compensation will be determined based on relevant experience, demonstrated capabilities, education, and overall alignment with the requirements of the position. This position is also eligible for a performance-based bonus tied to defined financial and operational objectives. Performance measures may include financial reporting accuracy and timeliness, forecasting accuracy, cash-flow and working-capital management, margin and profitability improvement, cost-reduction initiatives, internal-control improvements, and overall finance-department performance. Work Location & Schedule This is a full-time, 100% in-office position in Smithtown, Long Island, New York. This position is not remote or hybrid .
