About the Role We are a printing and mailing company looking for an experienced accounting professional to own our accounting function and month end close.
This is a hands-on role:
you will be the person who closes the books, not the person who reviews someone else's work. At the same time, we want more than data entry — you will be the financial voice in the room when we look at job profitability, pricing, staffing, and equipment decisions. This role suits someone who has outgrown a staff accountant or bookkeeping seat and wants full ownership, or an experienced controller who prefers a smaller company where they can see the whole picture. What You'll Own Day-to-Day Accounting Record daily financial transactions and manage the general ledger Manage accounts receivable, including customer invoicing, collections, and credit terms Manage accounts payable, including vendor terms, approvals, and payment timing Process or coordinate payroll and related reporting Monitor cash position and maintain a short-term cash forecast Close and Reporting Perform month-end and year-end close, including journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations Produce monthly financial statements — balance sheet, P&L, and cash flow — with commentary on what changed and why Prepare supporting schedules for the outside CPA firm at year end Job Costing and Inventory Track costs by job: paper, ink, envelopes, outside services, machine time, and direct labor Report on job-level and customer-level margins, and flag jobs running off estimate Maintain inventory of paper, envelopes, and consumables, including counts and valuation Reconcile postage: client postage deposits and postage billed versus postage spent Controls and Compliance Maintain and improve internal controls over cash, billing, and purchasing Prepare and file sales and use tax returns, and stay current on how print and direct mail are taxed in the states we ship to Manage business licenses, insurance renewals, and annual filings Maintain equipment and lease schedules, including depreciation and lease obligations Safeguard confidential financial data and maintain backups Planning Support Build the annual budget with ownership and report actual-to-budget variances Provide cost analysis to support pricing and quoting decisions Model the financial impact of equipment purchases, staffing changes, and new business What We're Looking For Required Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business 5+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including ownership of a monthly close Strong QuickBooks and Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, building a working model from scratch) Experience with job costing, inventory, or manufacturing-style cost accounting Comfortable working independently in a small-company environment where you handle both the detail work and the analysis High accuracy, strong organizational skills, and the judgment to prioritize when several deadlines land at once Clear written and verbal communication — able to explain the numbers to people who don't work in accounting Preferred Experience in printing, mailing, packaging, light manufacturing, or another job-shop environment Experience supervising or mentoring accounting or administrative staff CPA preferred but not required What We Offer Competitive salary: $65,000 - $90,000 per year, based on experience Health and dental insurance 401(k) with company match Paid holidays and paid time off
