What You'll Do Evaluate new and existing business applications and supplementary materials to determine the degree of risk, premiums, and insurability according to company policies and guidelines. This position follows a unique career trajectory, outlined below, providing growth and career development from day one.
Underwriter :
Exercises independent judgment in accepting or declining risks associated with routine applications for insurance coverage.
Intermediate Underwriter :
Exercises a great degree of independent judgment in accepting or declining risks associated with applications for insurance coverage that may be complex, unusual, or require a high level of personal underwriting authority.
Senior Underwriter :
Works independently and consults the manager only in regard to highly complex, unusual, or large risks that exceed the underwriter's personal underwriting authority. Serves as a mentor to Auto Underwriting staff members and assists with the training of less experienced Underwriters. Collaborates and works with other departments to serve as an Underwriting expert on various topics or committees.
Key Responsibilities:
Examines applications, renewals, and supporting documentation to ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance with underwriting guidelines. Gathers, reviews, and evaluates account and applicant information, which may include demographic data, prior loss history, inspection reports, financial or valuation documents, payment history, compliance records, and other relevant information used to assess risk. Reviews applications for proper classifications, coverage terms, endorsements, limits, and rates in accordance with established underwriting standards. Analyzes risk exposure and determines appropriate acceptance, declination, modification, pricing, or risk improvement recommendations within assigned authority levels and required timeframes. Determines appropriate risk distribution, limits, and pricing to support portfolio balance and profitability. Research new, unusual, or complex risks by reviewing underwriting guidelines, legal and regulatory requirements, filings, statutes, ownership structures, and other applicable factors to support sound underwriting decisions. Reviews complex, atypical, or risks exceeding assigned authority and collaborates with management to obtain approval as required. Prepares and maintains underwriting documentation, reports, affidavits, filings, and other materials needed by claims, agents, management, or regulatory bodies. Utilizes underwriting systems, databases, and analytical tools to monitor risk selection, portfolio performance, and adherence to underwriting standards. Trains, advises, and communicates with field personnel, agents, and internal departments regarding underwriting decisions, coverage, procedures, and best practices. Provides timely, professional, and positive customer service to internal and external stakeholders and maintains effective working relationships across the organization. Maintains current underwriting knowledge by participating in training, webinars, industry education, conferences, and other professional development opportunities. Supports operational improvement by collaborating with vendors, management, and information technology teams to evaluate new products, processes, and tools. Leads or contributes to assigned projects, demonstrating the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Ensures compliance with applicable company policies and state or federal regulations related to underwriting and risk selection. Performs other duties as assigned.
What You Bring Underwriter :
Bachelor's Degree in a relevant area; except that additional related work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for formal education.
Intermediate Underwriter :
Bachelor's Degree in a relevant area and a minimum of two years of experience as a property and casualty underwriter required; except that additional related work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the formal education requirement. Also, preferred is the completion of the Associate in Insurance designation program (AINS) with The Institutes. Has a proven ability to perform at the Intermediate Underwriter level
Senior Underwriter :
Bachelor's Degree in a relevant area and a minimum five years of experience as a property and casualty underwriter required; except that additional related work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the formal education requirement. Also preferred is the completion of one of the following from

Property/Auto Underwriter:
Associate in Personal Insurance (API) designation Successful completion of three or more Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) courses
Commercial Property Underwriter:
