Job Description
Life Insurance UnderwriterPosition Overview We are seeking a detail-oriented Life Insurance Underwriter to evaluate insurance applications, assess risk, and make timely, compliant underwriting decisions. The ideal candidate will have experience working with carriers and BGAs, strong knowledge of medical and financial underwriting, and the ability to communicate clearly with agents and internal stakeholders to support profitable book growth and excellent customer service.
Key ResponsibilitiesReview life insurance applications, medical records, and supporting documentation to assess risk and determine insurability.
Apply company underwriting guidelines and industry best practices to make consistent, compliant decisions.
Collaborate with agents, BGAs (Broker General Agencies), and insurance carriers to clarify application details, obtain additional information, and resolve underwriting issues.
Order and interpret third-party reports (e.g., APS, MIB, labs, financial statements) and integrate findings into underwriting decisions.
Document underwriting decisions, rationale, and case notes in the underwriting system accurately and promptly.
Recommend and structure appropriate product types, riders, and risk classifications to align with company goals and client needs.
Escalate complex or high-value cases to senior underwriters or medical directors as appropriate and participate in case review discussions.
Contribute to process improvement initiatives, training efforts, and knowledge sharing to enhance underwriting efficiency and quality.
QualificationsBachelors degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, or related field, or equivalent experience.3+ years of life insurance underwriting experience, including familiarity with carrier requirements and competitive product features.
Strong knowledge of underwriting processes, medical and financial risk assessment, and industry tools (APS, MIB, lab results interpretation).Experience working with BGAs and understanding broker-carrier relationships and case management.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for interacting with agents, BGAs, carriers, and internal stakeholders.
Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to make sound decisions under deadlines.
Proficiency with underwriting systems and MS Office; experience with carrier portals and case management systems preferred.
Relevant professional certifications (e.g., FLMI, ALU, AU) are a plus.
