Job Description

Senior Underwriter - Merchant Cash Advance (MCA) Vivian Capital group Newark, NJ Job Details Full-time $90,000 - $130,000 a year 2 hours ago Benefits Paid time off Qualifications Underwriting UCC law Banking analysis in risk and credit LexisNexis Risk analysis OCR Public records Loan underwriting CRM system proficiency Manual underwriting Credit analysis Full Job Description About Vivian Capital Vivian Capital is a direct funder in the merchant cash advance space. We underwrite and fund small business advances nationwide, with a book that runs from clean paper to stacked subprime files and a heavy renewal pipeline. We fund 2nd through 5th position deals on terms up to 10 months. We are a lean, decision-fast shop. No committee theater, no six-week approval cycles. If you are good, you will own your files. The Role We are hiring an experienced Senior Underwriter to own credit decisions end to end. This is an individual contributor seat with real approval authority, not a data-entry job with "underwriter" in the title. You will live in 2nd through 5th position subprime files, renewals, and reworks, the deals where the read on the merchant matters more than the score. What You Will Do Underwrite 2nd through 5th position advances on subprime and near-prime merchants, on terms up to 10 months. Spread and interpret 3 to 12 months of bank statements: true revenue, deposit quality, NSFs, negative days, average daily balance, holdback capacity.
Detect and quantify existing stacks:
UCC filings, daily and weekly debits, ACH patterns the merchant did not disclose. Size net-new exposure behind three or four existing positions without blowing up the merchant's cash flow. Own renewals and reworks. Assess payment history, remaining balance, net-new exposure, and whether a restructure is a rescue or a hole.
Structure approvals:
advance amount, factor, term, holdback percentage, and conditions, and defend the call. Run fraud, lien, judgment, and litigation checks. Spot doctored statements, synthetic merchants, and broker manipulation. Work directly with ISOs and brokers on stips, counters, and declines without letting the pipeline dictate the credit box.
Feed back into policy:
what is charging off, what is performing, and where the box should move. What You Need 4+ years underwriting merchant cash advances at a direct funder. Broker-side experience alone will not cut it. Demonstrated experience with 2nd through 5th position and subprime paper. You know what a stacked file looks like before the UCC search comes back. Comfort with longer paper, up to 10 month terms, and what that does to default risk. Fluency reading bank statements manually, not just accepting what the OCR spits out.
Hands-on with the stack:
Ocrolus, Heron, or similar bank statement OCR; DecisionLogic, Plaid, or MoneyThumb; Clear, LexisNexis, UCC and court record searches. Comfortable in an
MCA CRM or LOS:
Salesforce, Centrex, OnyxIQ, or equivalent. Judgment under volume. You can make defensible calls fast and explain your reasoning in two sentences. Able to work on-site in Newark, NJ. Nice To Have Experience building or tuning a credit box, scorecard, or approval matrix.
Portfolio performance analysis:
cohort default tracking, vintage curves. Collections or recovery exposure. You have seen how your approvals actually end. Compensation $90,000 to $130,000 base, depending on experience, plus a performance bonus tied to portfolio performance, not just volume approved. Paid time off. Direct access to ownership, short chain of command, fast decisions. How To Apply Apply with your resume. Strong candidates will be asked to walk through a live file.
