Join our team as we help shape the future. The Hartford's Middle & Large Business Inland Marine team is seeking an Underwriter to join our growing organization. This role is responsible for underwriting new and renewal Inland Marine business, building strong agency and broker relationships, and driving profitable growth within an assigned territory. As a member of the Inland Marine underwriting team, you will evaluate a broad range of risks, develop pricing and coverage solutions, and work closely with agents, brokers, customers, Risk Engineering, Claims, and underwriting partners to deliver exceptional results. This position offers the opportunity to combine technical underwriting expertise with relationship management and business development responsibilities. Key Responsibilities Underwrite new and renewal Inland Marine business in accordance with company guidelines and authority. Develop and maintain strong relationships with agents, brokers, and customers. Identify and pursue new business opportunities while maintaining a profitable portfolio. Analyze exposures, determine risk acceptability, and develop appropriate pricing and coverage strategies. Conduct agency, broker, and customer visits to strengthen relationships and enhance risk understanding. Collaborate with underwriting, risk engineering, claims, and sales partners to deliver comprehensive solutions. Manage an assigned portfolio to achieve growth, retention, and profitability objectives. Qualifications 3+ years of P&C Commercial carrier underwriting experience, preferably within Inland Marine, Property, Construction, or related lines. Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills. Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities. Ability to manage multiple priorities while delivering a high level of consultative customer service. Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining solid relationships with all internal and external business partners Ability to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations and propose solutions High energy self-starter, who is resilient and has an entrepreneurial spirit Goal-oriented and delivers outcomes Ability to challenge the status quo and compete to win
- This position can be filled at different levels depending on experience This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office ( Brea, CA and Los Angeles, CA ) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).
Compensation The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is: $78,400
- $186,000 The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
