Position Summary The Lead Director, Group Medicare Underwriting is responsible for leading underwriting activities across Group Medicare Advantage and Part D business, supporting both new business and renewal opportunities. This role plays a critical part in achieving Aetna's financial, growth, and membership objectives by evaluating risk, developing pricing strategies, and ensuring profitable business outcomes. As a senior underwriting leader, you will provide strategic direction to underwriting teams, oversee complex and high-profile cases, and drive consistent underwriting excellence across markets. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in healthcare insurance underwriting, proven leadership experience, and the ability to build strong partnerships across sales, account management, finance, product, and external stakeholders. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop multiple managers and underwriting professionals responsible for Group Medicare Advantage and Part D underwriting.
  • Drive underwriting strategies that balance membership growth, revenue targets, and profitability objectives.
  • Oversee complex new business and renewal opportunities across multiple markets and geographic regions.
  • Ensure effective risk assessment, pricing accuracy, and adherence to underwriting policies and guidelines.
  • Provide strategic guidance on high-profile cases and resolve complex underwriting challenges.
  • Partner closely with Sales, Account Management, Finance, Product, Actuarial, and other cross-functional teams to support business objectives.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, consultants, clients, and external business partners.
  • Represent Aetna in customer, broker, consultant, and market strategy discussions.
  • Use competitive market insights and financial analysis to identify growth opportunities while minimizing risk.
  • Lead and participate in strategic initiatives, projects, and workgroups that influence business outcomes and operational excellence.
  • Communicate underwriting strategies, product offerings, and company initiatives to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Foster a high-performing team culture through talent development, coaching, succession planning, and employee engagement. Additional Information

  • 10+ years of expereince.
  • 5+ years underwriting experience within health insurance, including Group Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Part D, or closely related healthcare insurance products.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience managing underwriting teams and developing people leaders.
  • Demonstrated expertise in underwriting principles, pricing methodologies, funding arrangements, and risk management practices.
  • Strong financial acumen with the ability to analyze complex data and make sound business recommendations.
  • Proven ability to influence and collaborate effectively across multiple stakeholders and organizational levels.
  • Experience presenting recommendations and business strategies to executive leadership and external clients.
  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to be work hybrid in Hartford. Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience leading underwriting functions within Medicare Advantage, Part D, or Group Retiree health insurance business.
  • Experience working directly with brokers, consultants, and large employer group clients.
  • Demonstrated success leading large-scale business initiatives and transformational projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of healthcare industry trends, regulations, and competitive market dynamics.

Pay Range The typical pay range for this role is: $100,000.00 - $231,540.00 This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.
