A Medical Underwriter uses medical and health information to evaluate an application for medical malpractice insurance or for health insurance. Medical malpractice insurance is essentially medical professional liability insurance for medical professionals. For health insurance, the underwriter reviews insurance documents to determine whether an offer of health insurance should be made, identifies and excludes pre-existing medical conditions, determine insurance types and limits, and calculate premium costs.

- Prepare the agenda for the Medical Technology Assessment Committee (in collaboration with the Medical Directors and the Manager, Research and Policy Development).
- Research and summarize medical literature, benchmarking, coding, regulations, and medical economics analysis for new medical technologies and for products/services designated as Experimental/Investigational.
- Update and maintain the list of services designated as Experimental/Investigational for each line of business.
- Make recommendations on coverage status based on the synthesis of the research.
- Prepare agenda for the Prior Authorization Committee (in collaboration with the chair, co-chair, and analytics team).
- Research relevant coding, benchmarking, and regulations for the Prior Authorization Committee and the Medical Policy Committee.
- Make recommendations to the Prior Authorization Committee on utilization management strategies, informed by value factor analysis and other relevant considerations.
