We are looking for a detail-oriented, service-minded professional who can make sound decisions within established guidelines while delivering accurate, timely results. Role Overview of a Town Underwriter This position is responsible for, but not limited to, analyzing new applications and endorsement requests for the purpose of selecting those risks that are acceptable based on established Company rules and guidelines. Performs under established routine and practice regarding underwriting rules. Responsibilities Demonstrates the Company's mission, while successfully performing its core values related to integrity, service, excellence, stability, strength, respect, and teamwork. Analyze and evaluate applications and endorsement requests to approve or decline in accordance with Company rules and guidelines. Calendar binders based on the effective date. Follow up on unanswered requests for information and expiring binders. Communicate effectively, by phone, e-mail or in writing, with agents, applicants, or policyholders. regarding questions raised or submitted and/or to obtain additional underwriting information. Receive and handle unsolicited phone calls that originate outside the Company. Have occasional in-person contact with agents and policyholders concerning underwriting questions or policy changes. Assist agents in figuring quotes on new risks. Handle routine policy cancellations and, if needed, manually calculate unearned premium. Coordinate the allocation of policy premiums with the Accounting Department. Handle late and insufficient funds premium payments, which includes re-underwriting the policy file. Ensure smooth workflow and assist in training employees and/or overseeing their work as requested. Keep current on underwriting rules and regulations. Provide technical guidance to Assistant Underwriters and clerical employees. Evaluate the necessity of a field inspection; request and thoroughly review field reports to analyze findings and determine the appropriate underwriting action. Regular and timely attendance in the office is an essential function of the position. In addition to the duties and responsibilities set forth above, the employee occasionally may be asked to assist in other duties throughout the company on an as-needed basis. At no time will any employee be required to perform any duties, which they are not mentally or physically capable of performing. Skills and Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor's degree in a related field preferred. Minimum of two years of experience in the insurance industry preferred. Completion of industry-related courses such as API, AINS, CPCU, or similar is a plus. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally and effectively with agents, insured parties, and mortgagees/lienholders via phone, email, written correspondence, and in-person meetings. Proficient in using a personal computer, including familiarity with standard business software applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite). Proven ability to perform detailed, precise work, take ownership of responsibilities, and collaborate effectively as part of a team.
