For health insurance, the underwriter reviews insurance documents to determine whether an offer of health insurance should be made, identifies and excludes pre-existing medical conditions, determine insurance types and limits, and calculate premium costs.

Candidate should be located in Hampton Roads, Richmond Metropolitan, or Northern Virginia area. This position is a trusted resource for challenging files, guideline interpretation, escalation support, and communication between sales and underwriting. The ideal candidate understands Atlantic Bay's process, culture, and commitment to helping good loans get done the right way. What you'll be doing Serving as a primary resource for loan officers, sales managers, underwriting teams, and branch leadership on complex loan scenarios. Reviewing challenging files and helping identify possible solutions before, during, and after underwriting review. Providing guidance on income, assets, credit, property, guideline interpretation, and documentation requirements. Acting as a liaison between sales and underwriting when further clarification, escalation, or advocacy is needed. Advocating appropriately for sales while respecting underwriting guidelines, investor requirements, company risk standards, and compliance requirements. Helping loan officers understand underwriting decisions and identifying the best path forward on difficult files. Partnering with underwriting and operations leadership to improve communication, consistency, and file flow. Staying current on agency, investor, company, and product guideline changes. Communicating key guideline updates, process changes, and common underwriting issues to the sales team in a clear and practical way. Identifying recurring file issues and providing proactive education to help reduce delays, resubmissions, and avoidable underwriting conditions. Supporting sales leadership by helping improve loan quality, pull-through, borrower experience, and overall pipeline efficiency. Performing other duties as assigned. What you'll bring Previous underwriting experience strongly preferred Strong understanding of conventional, FHA, VA, jumbo, and specialty loan guidelines Experience working within Atlantic Bay's systems, process flow, culture, and operations structure strongly preferred Strong knowledge of income analysis, asset documentation, credit review, appraisal issues, AUS findings, and common underwriting challenges Experience working directly with loan officers, processors, underwriters, and operations leadership Ability to balance sales urgency with sound credit judgment and compliance requirements Strong communication, problem-solving, and relationship management skills Perks Atlantic Bay offers a dynamic benefits package that includes a competitive base salary, eligibility for monthly bonuses, health insurance, 401(k), PTO, paid volunteer time and your birthday off with pay!
