  • Principal 2 is a senior-level portfolio management role responsible for the strategic oversight and execution of large-scale, technically complex portfolios comprised of multiple concurrent initiatives.
This role serves as a subject matter expert across multiple technical and business domains, providing executive-level financial oversight, driving cross-organizational governance, and mentoring project and program managers throughout the organization. The Principal 2 Technical Portfolio Manager operates with a high degree of autonomy, translating broad strategic objectives into actionable portfolio plans, while managing significant risk, ambiguity, and interdependency across business units. This individual is a recognized thought leader who raises the capability and maturity of the broader portfolio and program management community. Here's what you'll do: Portfolio Leadership & Planning Lead the planning, structuring, and onboarding of large-scale technical portfolios encompassing multiple complex, interdependent initiatives. Translate high-level strategic objectives into structured portfolio roadmaps, governance frameworks, and delivery plans. Continuously evaluate portfolio health, prioritization, and alignment with evolving business and technology strategy. Financial Oversight & Reporting Provide oversight, guidance, and quality assurance for portfolio-level financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis. Ensure accurate, timely, and executive-ready financial communication and reporting across all portfolio initiatives. Partner with finance and business stakeholders to align resource allocation with portfolio priorities. Governance & Cross-Organizational Collaboration Work closely with leaders of Project and Program Management Centers of Excellence (CoEs) to shape and enforce best practices, standards, and methodologies. Serve as a key liaison between technical delivery teams, business stakeholders, and executive leadership. Facilitate cross-functional alignment on priorities, dependencies, and resource conflicts across multiple business areas. Risk & Dependency Management Identify, assess, and manage complex risks, issues, and dependencies spanning multiple initiatives and business units. Develop mitigation strategies and escalation paths for high-impact or ambiguous problems, applying innovative and strategic solutions. Proactively monitor cross-portfolio dependencies to prevent downstream delivery or financial impacts. Mentorship & Capability Building Establish and lead formal mentorship relationships with project and program managers across multiple organizations. Coach and develop talent, sharing portfolio management best practices and technical domain expertise. Lead initiatives to elevate the overall quality of work and raise the capability of the broader PM/PgM community. Technical & Domain Expertise Apply deep, cross-domain technical knowledge to guide decision-making on complex, ambiguous problems. Integrate knowledge across multiple technical disciplines and specialties to deliver sound, well-reasoned portfolio outcomes. Stay current on emerging technologies, methodologies, and industry trends relevant to the managed portfolios. What you'll need to be successful: Experience 5
  • 7 years of progressive experience in portfolio, program, or project management, including managing large-scale, complex, and cross-organizational technical portfolios.
Demonstrated experience with portfolio financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting at scale. Proven track record of successfully leading multiple concurrent, high-complexity initiatives to completion. Technical & Domain Expertise Subject matter expert with a demonstrated ability to master and operate across multiple technical business domains. Advanced knowledge of portfolio management methodologies, frameworks, and industry best practices (e.g., PMI, SAFe, Agile/Scrum, hybrid delivery models). Working knowledge of relevant technical infrastructure, systems, or platforms applicable to the organization's portfolio. Leadership & Soft Skills Strong mentorship, coaching, and leadership capabilities with demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders across organizational boundaries without direct authority. Excellent executive communication skills, with the ability to distill complex financial and technical information for senior leadership audiences. Proven ability to operate independently against broad, objective-based assignments with minimal direction. Strong problem-solving skills, capable of addressing complex and ambiguous challenges with innovative or strategic solutions. Preferred Credentials PMP, PgMP, PfMP, or equivalent portfolio/program management certification preferred. Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical, business, or management discipline; advanced degree a plus. May require a background check due to job duties requiring routine access to DIRECTV and DIRECTV customer's proprietary data. The Base Salary range displayed below reflects the minimum and maximum target salary for each of DIRECTV's 4 (four) US Labor Market Zones. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
